Hi all
I was wondering if anyone could give me ideas of things to do over a couple of days next month. I have been to New York once before and done the 'typical tourist'* things, as it were. This time, I am redoing a couple of the 'typical tourist' things as one of my friends has not been before. In our itinerary, we have also given ourselves two days where we go off on our own and do our thing. I'd like to spend my two days (in separate weeks) doing things that are a bit different. It'll have to be activities to do during the day and I don't mind doing things outside Manhattan as I'd like to explore one or two different areas. Generally, the things that interest me are: TV, books, music, sport. I am more than happy to walk a lot so that doesn't need to be a restriction. If anyone has any advice/tips etc, that'd be great. Thanks!
* By this I mean Empire State, Top of the Rock, 9/11 memorial, Grand Central, museums etc etc.0 -

You could do a TV Show tour? Or check and see if there's any concerts that you would like to go to whilst there?0 -
Do you have any recommendations for Ski gear, jacket and sallopettes, I would really like to buy some Spyder stuff on Black Friday.
Have decided to go watch the ballons being inflated the day before the parade and watch the parade on TV, is that coping out?
I guess there's always Century 21, but if you're fixed on Spyder in particular then maybe not - it's a bit like a massive TK Maxx and it's just pot luck as to what they've got in, in the same way.0 -
Is it still advisable to follow the 3 month rule? I'm looking to visit in May next year and wanted to book around January when they usually have flight sales on.0

I am going in May too and was getting worried as the hotels I was looking at seemed to be getting booked up quickly! (there are 3 adults going so less choice of good rooms). Anyway, I decided to book it yesterday and paid £560 each for flights MAN to JFK. Not sure if this is a good price for May but it's done now so I'm not looking anymore!0 -
With 2 weeks until I go to NYC, I thought I best mention it on here for fear of missing out on anything when we go. To put it bluntly we go to New York on Monday 14th from Manchester to Heathrow then to Newark. We are staying at the Nolitan - heard and read great reviews but has anybody who frequents this forum stayed there?
We feel we have pretty much nailed down everything we want to see, we have booked the Brooklyn Brewery and got Brooklyn Nets tickets but I just wanted to check we haven't missed out on anything? Is there anything you peeps on here would recommend doing that you don't usually find in the guide books etc, legal activities obviously?Millionaire in Training

Has anyone used the Virgin Money prepaid card? We have all our spending money but don't want to take it all in cash. We also don't want another credit card so thought the prepaid option might be better. No charges for using it unless it's for withdrawing cash and the charge for that is pretty low. We're going for 4 days and will be taking some cash with us to pay for small things so probably won't need to take out anymore.
Anyone had experience with these kinds of cards?
Thanks!0 -
Haven't used Virgin Money card, but have used euro PO and Caxton versions, and DS2 is currently in possession of a $ Travelex after losing his wallet 3 days before travelling ...
You want to check how long it will take for funds to get onto the card if you have to top it up online from your bank account, and whether your bank will charge for this service. Smile does. You also need to be able to get into your online banking, although there may be other ways of doing it.

Well we land around 2pm on 14th October at Newark. We have booked tickets for the 9/11 memorial at around 5pm that day and the rest of the day is pretty fluid.
For Tuesday we plan to go up to see everything Central Park area and further 'up' Upper West/East Side. Included is the Met, Strawberry Fields, The Guggenheim, Pomander Walk, Dakota Building, Friedsam Carousel, Belvedere Castle, Lincoln Centre and Bloomingdales etc.
In the Evening we have booked the Brooklyn Brewery Tour then tickets for the Brooklyn Nets Basket Ball at the arena in Brooklyn.
On the Wednesday we are hoping to do everything 'Times Square' including Empire State, The Rock, New York Public Library, Chrysler, Grand Central Station, Flat Iron building, Paley Park, Macys Etc.
On the Thursday at our hotel https://www.nolitan.com we can hire bikes so hoping to cycle the southern stretch of the green route on the map link below http://www.nycbikemaps.com/
Also for Thursday possibly Roosevelt Island, Wall Street, Battery Park, High Line (The High Line I am possibly most excited about the whole trip) The Ghostbusters Firehouse (Childhood dream to see it - See also Friends TV show Apartment)
Then we have allday Friday to catch up on anything we may have missed before flying out around 6pm ish. I have a long list of roof top bars, pubs etc and places to eat but all recommendations welcome! Will definitely be making a trip to Abercrombie, Carhartt and the Onitsuka Tiger shop.
Finally, would anybody know the best place to get a New York Themed Christmas Tree decoration? Bit of a family tradition!Millionaire in Training
