Last time I flew into Newark im not sure there was any such thing as the Airtrain, and we got a shuttle bus which was absolutely fine. This time I think we will get the train (am assuming this is as easy as the JFK to Penn route) then walk to hotel from Penn station, found this easy enough last time.

We are flying home at 7pm that night, will subway, taxi etc be running as normal on Thanksgiving? If public transport is going to be a bit quieter then we would probs get train to airport, otherwise will probs spring for a taxi/car service as I hate messing about with the luggage when its time to go home!

Public Transport runs 24/7/365 in NYC. Getting from EWR is OK, there is an AirTrain that runs to Newark Airport Station, from there get a NJ Transit train to New York Penn Station (Not Newark Penn).

If you're flying at 7pm, you need to be at the airport for 4:30pm so you'll be leaving Manhattan 3:30pm at the latest...

We have just booked, going 24th-28th November direct from manchester to newark with United. Staying at the Gansevoort Park Avenue, £814 each. Cant wait! Am going with my sister and we are already making lists of where we want to go and what we want to buy!

My friend who lives in nyc is going to try and get us tickets in the grandstands for the macys parade, which will be good if she can. Any other fun stuff we could do in the run up to thanksgiving? We have both been to nyc quite a few times, although never at that time of year so unsure if theres anything different going on

Was in the states (Connecticut) during thanksgiving and it was really great. Everything ran as normal, public transport etc... but maybe you can double check on their public transport site, google mta. (Sorry, I can't include a link for some reason!)

    Hope it helps, have fun

Are you going to be drawing out cash from your credit card cargo? Watch out for the fees, plus interest accumulates from the day you withdraw it.

Ok, ignore the fee thing as clarity doesn't charge a fee, watch out for the 12.9apr though.

    Thank you.
It seems a right old mess around. I got the card as I had understood it was the best available (which I guess it still is) but it occurs to me that it is much simpler to just get a bunch of money exchanged here at the best rates available on that day and if we run out get some more over there.
The only down side is carrying the money around whilst getting there. But at least I know what I have got and not worried about this rate that rate if there's a atm this that and the other :-)

Thanks for all replies I very much appreciate the time taken to write them.

Well I guess it is 'a right old mess around' if you're adamant in not using the card the way it is designed to give you the best/most advantageous rate.

Just stick all your purchases on it and pay it off when you get home, no fees, no interest, best rate of exchange.
Just take a small amount of cash for tipping and incidentals.

The BEST card for what you want to do Cargo, is a debit card, not a credit card.

Put money in the bank account, and use it to withdraw cash.

There are currently only 3 accounts (that I'm aware of) that offer fee free cash withdrawals,

    MetroBank
    Norwich & Peterborough

and there is a very specific Nationwide one which is the FlexPlus, but that costs £10 per month.

It is a minefield, but if you pay for goods, then you have got the best.

BUT you still have to find an ATM that doesn't charge you as well.

Or at least an ATM where the charge is less than the benefit you'll gain from the improved rate of exchange you'd get.
