Is it with a chain? if so see if they have other hotels closer in, and look for deals as M4RKM suggests.

I'm no expert, but maybe two rooms wouldn't be twice the price of one suite?

    Hi,

The way I look at things, are, where are you wanting to go on holiday? If you want to visit New Jersey, then awesome, Secaucus will do the trick, however, If feel you want to visit New York, then you really need to look for hotels in New York.

However, you have something booked, you've not revealed how much you're paying or what your budget for your stay is, so I'm stuck now at what to suggest.

Hotel Beacon near Central Park is often recommended for a 2 bed suite. I do like the idea of 2 rooms. Sometimes the 2 bed suites (which are rare), are more expensive than 2 standard rooms.

The hotel we have booked is the Embassy Suites it is around $800 for 3 nights between 3 people , I had a look at the Hotel Beacon and although it has 2 rooms it only has 1 queen bed where as the ES has 2 queens so S-I-L will have her own bed but can go to the sofa bed if she needs to.
I know it's not ideal being in NJ but I think it's the best we can do for what we need.
We would be willing to pay more to be in NY but I think to get what we have at the ES we would have to pay a lot more.

Yeah, at one of the most expensive time of year, you're not going to find anything around $260 in NYC for what you want.

It isn't convenient being in Secaucus, and it won't be fun travelling and getting stuck in traffic for maybe an hour a day, but if you're not wanting to up your budget, or tweak your requirements.

Country Inn & Suites in Long Island City is $180 per room per night with one king in each room. I still think 2 rooms is a better idea, as you get more space, and 2 bathrooms. Also, such a short holiday, are you really wanting to waste time commuting... I know I wouldn't.

That's part of the issue as well, it's not a short holiday, we are travelling in the USA for a month so we do need to keep the costs down where we can.
S-I-L is quite willing to share one room and sleep on a sofa bed if ness when we are travelling but she would like her own bed for the 3 nights we are in NY. Having 2 rooms would double the price for her as she is a single person paying for her own room whereas we are 2 people paying for 1 room.
It's a bit of a shame about the traffic because it's not actually too far, we will have to hope we are lucky.

    Hi
Why not look at a room with a Queen bed and a separate living area? That way your S-I-L can have her own bed (albeit a sofa bed) - Have you looked at the Marmara? How much will it cost to travel into Manhattan from where you plan on staying?

As I mentioned above, this is one of the promlems, she dosen't want to spend 3 nights on a sofa bed as she may well have to do so sometimes on the rest of the trip, I can't see it being too expensive on the bus into NY, I think it's about $5 or so each way.
Just looked at the link you supplied and its over $1200 without taxes for 3 nights for one bed suite. We have a 2 queen bed 2 room suite for $800 alibet in Secauas.

You're concentrating on the cost, rather than the convenience. If sitting in an hours traffic each day, waiting to go through the tunnel, is your idea of fun, then stay in Secaucus. It is a short holiday to NEW YORK CITY. Just because you're travelling across the rest of the USA, doesn't get rid of the fact that 3 nights in NYC doesn't even scratch the surface. Wasting potentially a few hours a day, eats into the time you're going to have time to see stuff..

Your situation isn't easy, but it is your and your s-i-l's choice to NEED a bed AND a sofa bed, and another bed in a suite for these 3 nights.

If you got rid of the requirement of the sofa bed, and only went for 2 queen beds, then you'd find something quite easily. Also, if you end up with 2 rooms, why not be nice, and add both the costs together, and split it by 3, which means everyone is paying the same. Yeah, you're having to subsidise, but that's what I'd do, therefore no doubling of costs.

Also, September is always one of the most expensive time of years to find something, Thanks to the UN / Tennis / Bank Holiday, and you're looking so late, I just think that you'll not find anything that you want in a city that runs easily over 80% hotel occupancy, if not higher at that time of year.

Wouldn't the logical thing to do, is when you're in a cheaper city for a few nights to have the requirement of a suite etc, because that would keep costs down, as NYC is probably one of the most expensive cities in the US.

my partner and I stayed in new jersey and it really wasn't as bad as everyone is making out, we enjoyed our bus ride to new york, had the added bonus of catching a nap on the way so we arrived ready to hit the pavements, the journey was not no so bad 30mins and we were there. We also enjoyed the ease of visiting the malls in new jersey. For those on a budget it works very well, so don't be put off.
