    As there are very very few legal hostels in NYC, and numerous illegal ones (that don't keep things to code, or are converting Single Room Occupancy buildings), it's exactly what I meant.

    There is a Hostelling International on Amsterdam Ave that is legal, and the easiest way to get there is via Public Transportation. A Shuttle will take around 3-4 hours, because the hostel is up on 103rd street, it'll drop everyone else off first.

    Ok.

    JFK from the Airport to Jamaica
    Jamaica take the LIRR (Long Island Rail Road), to Penn Station, NYC.
    From Penn Station, take the 1 train Uptown and get off at 103rd Street. Exit the Subway station and walk 1 block East and cross over Amsterdam Ave, and the Hostel is just there.

    This all in all will cost the following.
    AirTrain = $5
    LIRR = $7
    Subway = $2.50 with a metrocard or $2.75 single fare.

    Cheaper than a shuttle, Quicker than a shuttle, cheaper than a taxi or car service too.

    how much will the shuttle be please, hes going to be landing at night , and can you recommand one

    I will never recommend a shuttle service. They are unreliable, and at night, you want to get to the hotel the QUICKEST way, not the longest. A shuttle has to wait on the airport until it is full, otherwise it isn't cost effective to leave. This means that the quieter the airport is, the longer it will wait. Lets say it's taken 30 mins to get through immigration, 1 hour waiting on a van, 45 mins to get to Manhattan, and as your son is staying on the Upper West Side is the last to be dropped off, that could be another 90 minutes of driving around Manhattan.

    It is unfeasible to recommend and I just can't do it. Google is your friend, probably the cost will be as high as $35 with luggage.

    You say he is landing at "night". What exactly is that time? If it is before midnight (and even the late flights from the UK get in at 8pm IIRC), then you've got no worries around public transportation, even though it runs 24/7, it does get less frequent after 1am. I can't see the issue with public transportation for this route. It's simple, cheap, and it is fast.

    A car service is what I'd recommend if you want a door to door service. Carmel Car Service is cheap and perfectly acceptable. $52 plus toll ($5) tip ($10) gives you $67.

    Car sharing is a good idea on paper but alot of waiting around and sometimes trtaveling around too . Nightime you wont get to see the sighta as you approach Manahattan so . !! Its not for me . (be nice if you were last in and first out) Bowery.. young and on your own in NYC can be a good place as there are other alike people there . Its in a great location to see the NYC nightlife and very cosmopolitain . (not as good as the website shows it though) .

    Aer Lingus - You clear immigration in Dublin so that speeds things up alot in JFK.

    this is true, maybe its only me, but it scares the wits out of me :eek:, even when your innocent, doing nowt wrong, you feel guilty, scared, :o that said....i would still go back to NYC today if i could ;)
