Enjoy :D I'm sure you will have a great time. The weather at the end of August is meant to be a bit better too (from what I've read)

Well if it hits 90 Fahrenheit today (3 days in a row I think) it officially a heat wave!

    Anyone?

If my question is too specific or non specific or even unanswerable, just tell me. I will move on :D

No idea how old your children are &/or whether they'd find it interesting, but I've read a lot of good things about the Tenement Museum on the LES.

Or a food tour maybe? Again, depends a lot on what you're into but I've done a few in various parts of the US and think they're a great way to try new things and see places which might be a bit off the normal tourist track. I'm signed up to do this one in the LES in August with Free Tours by Foot - unfortunately I don't think it will work with the days you're there but I've seen various others on Groupon and the like which cover the same kind of area, including Katz's Deli.

We've not been to Union Square, so will check that out - thanks :T

Totally agree with you on the Greenwich Village and SoHo approach.

We've done the Staten Island Ferry before and the seaport, as well as the WTC memorial (though not recently). Never been to LES before so was hoping for some hidden gems there :)

The LES is a hidden gem in itself. Plenty of great bars and restaurants. Not much in the way of shopping, but easy to walk from there to soho/greenwich village.

I stayed at Hotel on Rivington and found it a great place to be. Never went above 14th street on that trip to NYC.

oh my word my eyes are square from reading through this post - great advice!!

I'm looking to book my flights for NYC marathon in Nov so going on the Friday 1st and staying for 7 days. Flying from Manchester, look at flights below 11 hours.

US airways £471 (nice flight times)
    Aer Lingus £475
    BA £485 (nice flight times)
    Virgin £496

There isnt much difference in the prices so who have people flown with and prefer? Ideally I'd have liked a power socket but looks like this isn't standard on economy. Therefore decent entertainment will have to do.

    What do you guys think?

I always seem to fly virgin to NY, and will do so again in Nov, however my choice this time was based on getting upgraded to upper class thanks to all my virgin miles. I cant fault their service to JFK, in fact the only grumble we've ever had in 6 trips is the last time they lost the ex's bag on the way back and it was a nightmare chasing them for this.

I've flown BA to LA and again cant fault their service either.

Both have pretty good inflight entertainment, the main difference being I found virgin seemed to have more current films on their system.

I would'nt get too hung up on in flight entertainment though as the flight time is'nt massive so take a book etc and the time will fly by.
Live each day like its your last because one day you'll be right

I'd look for a direct flight. None of the above companies fly direct to my knowledge. American Airlines fly into JFK, United fly into EWR. I don't know your exact dates, so can't search and help out. Maybe that BA flight is direct, as it is codesharing with American Airlines, that will change my opinion.

Aer Lingus - You clear immigration in Dublin so that speeds things up alot in JFK.

US Airways - Changing at Philadelphia. I used to do this route quite a lot, but at that price, I don't think the hassle of the change there is quite worth it.

BA & Virgin - Heathrow, probably not too bad, but I think a change in Dublin is a better option. Makes for a shorter overall flight hours.
