Anyone got any advice on cheap hotels/motels in NYC?
As you don't really need a car in NYC, there are not many motels.
I know I sound like a broken record, but the cheap hotels that are of good quality would be ones in Long Island City. This is a short hop on the Subway to Manhattan, and you can normally get the Country Inn & Suites for less than $150 per night before taxes.
It really depends on dates, as prices can vary wildly, but it's a good starting point

what do you mean by 'is it even legal'
he has to stay in a hostel on amsterdam ave, hes not here so don't know what number and i didn't relise the street was 6 miles long, its for camp and this is where they put you up till they pick you up for camp
As there are very very few legal hostels in NYC, and numerous illegal ones (that don't keep things to code, or are converting Single Room Occupancy buildings), it's exactly what I meant.
There is a Hostelling International on Amsterdam Ave that is legal, and the easiest way to get there is via Public Transportation. A Shuttle will take around 3-4 hours, because the hostel is up on 103rd street, it'll drop everyone else off first.
Ok.
JFK from the Airport to Jamaica
Jamaica take the LIRR (Long Island Rail Road), to Penn Station, NYC.
From Penn Station, take the 1 train Uptown and get off at 103rd Street. Exit the Subway station and walk 1 block East and cross over Amsterdam Ave, and the Hostel is just there.
This all in all will cost the following.
AirTrain = $5
LIRR = $7
Subway = $2.50 with a metrocard or $2.75 single fare.
Cheaper than a shuttle, Quicker than a shuttle, cheaper than a taxi or car service too.0 -
Hi guys
Am after a little advice please?
I am travelling to New York on Friday 31st with my husband and another couple to celebrate my husbands 30th birthday. We arrive at JFK at about 1:30pm on 31st and depart on 3rd at around 10:00pm, so are very tight for time but want to make sure we get he most out of the trip - any guidance would be most welcome.
We would like to do the include the following in our trip:
Empire State Building
Statue of Liberty
Top of the rock
Brooklyn bridge
Catch a broadway show
A little bit of shopping
My husband would like to see a sporting vent but I'm guessing we've left if way too lat for this?
Are we missing anything? What is the most logical way of seeing thing?
Would also appreciate any recommendations for any restaurants and bars, nothing too flash but still nice.
Thank you
As for sport events the usual late choice is the baseball and your dates won't help.
The Yankees are playing the Boston Red Sox which is about their biggest fixture. Seats seem to be available but you'll be paying through the nose ($160 for seats I paid $5 for at another game).
The Mets are out of town.
Don't know about Basketball but I think these sell out (never been sure why as it's quite possibly the dullest game on the planet).0 -
its from jfk to amsterdam ave, think taxi will be too expensive and hes never been before so don't know much about public transport
My son did this exact journey a few years ago when he was 18 or 19. I don't have the time right now to research this but he got the main airport shuttle train which took him to Grand Central Station. From there he got a taxi from the rank there to this particular hostel (it probably is the same one). That cut down on costs and the train allowed him to acclimatise a bit before getting the cab.
The hostel isn't great but presumably "free". I would also suggest that he gets a UK sim card which will allow free incoming calls, such as Toggle Mobile. We were able to "remote control" him in case he got lost and/or worried about where he was and look up anything online.
His timings may be out as it depends on how long he takes at immigration (he will be on a J1 Visa I guess). I was being a bit of a helicopter parent but he managed OK by himself by and large!!0 -
Calamine lotion - I think you need a drugstore? But maybe a pharmacy? You could also ask for antihistamine tablets. Ask the hotel reception where you'd go to get such things.
When are you due to fly back, and have the rest of your party had it?
Hi, thank you. We are using calamine lotion and he is fine but he is really covered with spots. We are flying back to London on Wednesday evening and Im pretty sure his face will be all spotty. Me and my other son had them already long time ago. I really need us fly back home, I dont know what to do - I dont think he will be contagious but what happens if they say no? Will they just leave us in the airport? For how long? Im so worried. Thank you.2014 - Lisbon - February

Thank you.Chickenpox is most infectious from one to two days before the rash starts, until all the blisters have crusted over (usually five to six days after the start of the rash).
If your child has chickenpox, try to keep them away from public areas to avoid contact with people who have not had it, especially people who are at risk of serious problems, such as newborn babies, pregnant women and anyone with a weakened immune system (for example, people having cancer treatment or taking steroid tablets).
I've done some googling on 'can I fly with chickenpox' - from the same site there's this:Travelling on a plane
If you or your child have chickenpox, you may not be allowed to fly until six days after the last spot has appeared.
You and your child should be safe to fly once you're past the infectious stage and all of the blisters have crusted over. But it's best to check the policy of your airline first. Inform the airline as soon as chickenpox is diagnosed.
It is also important to let your travel insurer know if you or your child have chickenpox. You need to make sure that you'll be covered if you have to delay or cancel your holiday, or if you need to extend your stay until your child is well enough to fly home.Signature removed for peace of mind0
