what's so special about the week we are going, why is it so busy?

also, for the other areas, can you recommend a few good hotels, we have only been to manhattan and never went anywhere else (we did literally walk the whole of the manhattan )

    thanks

In Long Island City, have a look at both the Verve Hotel and the Country Inn and Suites. I did a quick search on Kayak and prices are coming up around $180 and $150 a night respectively (including taxes) for 26th to 31st October. Those prices are similar to what I was getting in August, so for a busy time like October I would say they're pretty reasonable.

Both are recommended pretty consistently both on here and the Trip Advisor New York forum.

just found a great website called onfinestay that has lots of apartments to rent which work out cheaper than the average 3 star hotel, has anyone heard of them and are they all legal apartments?
Never heard of the website but that says more about me than the website . And No they are not all legal apartments (i guessed that without checking but i guess i am right .)

We stayed at the Verve. A magically low $90 a night in April. It's a decent enough hotel. The area is a bit deserted though but safe and close to plenty of subway stations.

Not the easiest hotel to get to with luggage off the subway though as the area is a bit of a maze of roads.

As it is illegal to rent an apartment for less than 30 days in New York when there are 4 or more units in the building, then I'd hazard a wild guess and state that at least 95% of the ones on that website will be illegally rented, and you face the chance of eviction.

I've given suggestions to stay in reasonably priced places. Long Island City is reasonably priced, and you can get hotels under $150 a night. Not bad for 10 minutes on the subway and you'll be at Central Park. Brooklyn you should be able to find somewhere around $200 a night. 10 mins on the subway and you're looking out on Lady Liberty, or in Union Square.

Loads of places have great links. Why is the time you want to go so expensive, because NYC is a great place to visit, the weather is perfect at that time of year, and everyone wants to go when you do.

Hi All, I have been reading for some time about your experiences and advice for New York trip. We are travelling next Saturday (myself and my 2 kids - 14 and 8). This is our very first USA trip and unfortunately quite short - we will have 3 and half full days in the city. I have already booked the 911 memorial and also want to go to TOTR and Staten Island Ferry. There are also places in Brooklyn Bridge, Central Park, Grand central Station, Times Square and Empire State building we want to see. We will be using Subway (staying in Long Island hotel) as we are on a budget.
I would like to know where do you go for shopping when in New York? My boys want to buy basketball staff, trainers, sport clothes. We also would love to go to M&M store as my younger one really wants to buy M&Ms for his friends. Can you please advice? Thank you.

The M&M store is in Times Square - you really can't miss it ;)

Your 8 year old may enjoy Toys R Us (also Times Sq) and maybe the Hershey Store (Times Sq). There always was at least one sports shop there too. We found a better selection of shops in SoHo but I'm not sure I'd make a special trip there. Just keep your eyes peeled as you wander around, there are shops all over the place.

For your sports stuff I would recommend Modells sports shop or Grand Slam which is a huge souvenir shop with sports stuff on the second floor. Both are in Times square :)

I really like Soho for shopping. There is a Footlocker, Adidas and Converse store in Soho

Hi, we're considering a family holiday to NYC during may half term. There'd be 6 adults, 1 early-teen and 1 pre-teen. Our biggest worry is food while we're there. Is it likely to be expensive? (MrD and I went in 2003 and we totally indulged, but this isn't really something we could do with so many of us). We went to Vegas last Oct which was perfect because of all the buffets. I'm guessing there isn't anything like that in NYC. Thanks!

    Hi
I think it depends on what you like eating and your budget?. I have eaten out very well and also eaten fast food for dinner and have been happy.

What hotel do you plan on staying at? Having a kitchenette will be helpful
