Can I just bump my previous questions:herman2811 wrote: »Can I please just double check about an airport transfer from newark to manhattan (Chinatown) - from a previous post, I was advised the best way is:
Air train to NJ Transit station
Train to Penn station
Taxi to hotel.
How much does each step cost, and how long does each take? Presumably, the above steps in reverse is the best way when returning to the airport?
How does the above compare to taking the Newark Liberty Airport express bus?0 -

Someone did answer regarding the cost of the airtrain and NJ Transit. It's a single ticket costing $12.50.
As for the taxi, well, depends exactly where you're going, and what the traffic is like. Chinatown is a vague description, so I'll hazard a guess at around $10-$15 plus 15% tip. Depends on which hotel it is, whether this is the best way. When you're in Penn Station you've got some good subway links, so that could be an option.
Personally, I wouldn't take the bus, gets stuck in traffic on the approach and exit to the tunnel, could take much longer than the train.

Well I did answer part of your question.
The train from Penn to Newark airport is $12.50 and that includes the Air train. It takes about half an hour!!~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Not too long for me to go now! :T
We arrive in NYC via Penn Station at 6pm on a Tuesday. Is the easiest way to get to our hotel (Affinia Shelburne @ lexington ave) a cab? Or at that time would it be quicker to walk? We are happy taking the subway normally, but dealing with London Underground with bags is hassle, and at rush hour I hate to do it! (I get annoyed with all the tourists, and don't want to be THAT person! :rotfl:):T0 -
Hello all
I am taking my daughter to New York for her 16th birthday
we are flexible when we go as we both are off from sat 26th oct for a week so we could fly out Friday evening onwards and as long as we are back before the following Sunday that would be fine
so far I have looked at flights going out on the 26th and returning on the 31st oct (indirect with airfrance for about £850 for the two of us from heathrow) - we want to stay in central new york and have been looking at the roosevelt hotel
last time we went we stayed in the westin and loved it there but thats now way out of our league money wise
can anyone give me some ideas of a good deal, my searching still comes up with about £1800 for the two of us and I am finding that hard to swallow - we are happy not to stay that long but dont want to have a really short break - we dont mind if we do indirect flights and can fly from places like birmingham, bristol, london etc
as for hotels, we want something nice and in a central, safe area - we dont want to have to get trains/subways as we want to walk
can anyone give any help to try to bring the price down but still get a great place to stay?
thanks in advance0 -

You are choosing one of the most expensive times of year to visit. October. For a shorter break, you want a direct flight. You could easily consider staying somewhere other than Manhattan.
New York City is much more than Manhattan, and there are reasonable price places in Long Island City, which will reduce the cost of your stay down drastically. Other areas to look at would be Williamsburg, Brooklyn or Park Slope, Brooklyn. Williamsburg and Long Island City are within 15 minutes of Manhattan.
As for flights? You could check Kayak. It is normally cheaper to fly midweek, and as you've got holiday through a M-F it's difficult to do that. Also, Most flights TO the US leave in the Morning (there are some that leave around 5pm, but you've wasted the whole day!)

BA, VS and AA all fly up to about 8-8.30pm from London to NYC. Means you can have a full days work then arrive at the airport to fly. You arrive in NYC very late, meaning you'll most likely head straight to bed, but it does mean you'll be fully fresh first thing the next morning to enjoy your trip.
If you are on a tight schedule (ie number of days off work), this gives you the most time actually in NYC (rather than taking the first flight out on Saturday morning, arriving at lunchtime then feeling very lagged by 6-7pm).Legal team on standby0 -
what's so special about the week we are going, why is it so busy?
also, for the other areas, can you recommend a few good hotels, we have only been to manhattan and never went anywhere else (we did literally walk the whole of the manhattan )
thanks0 -
just found a great website called onfinestay that has lots of apartments to rent which work out cheaper than the average 3 star hotel, has anyone heard of them and are they all legal apartments?0
