Air train to NJ Transit station
    Train to Penn station
    Taxi to hotel.

How much does each step cost, and how long does each take? Presumably, the above steps in reverse is the best way when returning to the airport?

I can't answer all your questions but I can tell you that the Airtrain is included in your train ticket which is $12.50. It takes about half an hour. :D

I've done a day trip to DC, just to do a self guided walking tour. There was plenty to see, and it was great weather too. If you're really into Museums, you really do need more than 1 day, but I just went for a 1 day photo spree, and something different than NYC.

4 nights in each would be a good split, and you'd get a great feel for both of the cities.

£360 is an absolute bargain for a flight... who is that with?

    Thanks M4RKM,

Am thinking of doing a self guide one myself, early train there and late train back is cheaper than going by bus with Viator, I'd get a full day there to see the major landmarks as well rather than the 4 hours you'd probably get with them!!

Hotel is already booked so splitting it 3/4 days in each is out now as others have suggested.

Flight is with United, checked a few days ago and the same flight is now £770, so I'm now very happy!!!

Decided to upgrade to Premium Economy for an extra £125!

As a big hint for Washington DC, try a Segway tour. It's an amazingly fun way to see the city and not something you can do in NYC (sadly).

Booked to go for the last week of June, managed to get a flight from Birmingham for £360 so pretty happy with that as it saves the trek to London from the Midlands.

Has anyone done the Washington Day tour from nyc hrough Viator? Wouldn't mind a quick stop there to see the main sights.

Assume this is with a stop somewhere as there don't seem to be any direct flights from Birmingham to NYC any more?

Oh YES, Segway is the most fun you can have on two wheels, IMO. Only done it on holiday in the Canary Islands, but now trying to persuade my managers that it would be a good team building experience to take us all Segwaying for the day. :rotfl:

No direct flight, there was one with a stop in Dublin for about 8 hours for £340. The hassle didn't seem worth saving £20 for.
