haven't been to NYC yet (fly on 20 April!) but I've had two things recommended to me that i thought I'd share...

-I've just bought a guide book called 'the little black book of New York' which is broken down into the neighbourhoods and gives you the things to see/where to eat/where to shop/where to stay/things for kids to do in each one with a little fold out map and a subway map at the back of the book.

-If you want to eat at a fancy restaurant then a lot of them do great lunch time menu deals- if you look up NYC prix fixe on google there's a few guides. hopefully when i get back I'll be able to recommend a couple!

A final word on the attraction passes. The New York Explorer Pass can fit everything that I want to do on there, the same things as the GoSelect Pass, except it's about $20 cheaper. There aren't any drawback to the Explorer pass, are there? (Asking anyone who's had this pass.)

I don't know about the New York one specifically, but the ones we used in LA were from the same company and there were some restrictions on how you could use it e.g. it was only valid on one particular bus tour a day (say 10am), Warner Bros tour could only be done in the afternoon etc. You can download a copy of the booklet which comes with the pass from their website which gives all the details so I would check through that to make sure.

I've actually been looking at the Explorer Pass myself after pricing things up and one thing I did notice was that if you do certain things you can't do others e.g. you can only pick one of the Circle Line boat tours, one of a choice of walking tours and so on. It's all in the small print, just check that you understand exactly how it works.

A couple of things I did find out which might be useful...you can get 9% cash back on the purchase price from TopCashBack (search for Smart Destinations - there was also a discount code on there the other day which gave you a discount on the shipping cost) and if you're interested in the Circle Line Cruise, you can upgrade from the 2 hour tour included in the pass to their full 3 hour tour for an extra $5.

    Hope that helps.

Just had a quick look at the Jane for a potential trip in Nov and I take it from the price you paid you had a shared bathroom?

Also the reviews really arent that favourable but each to their own I guess

If you don't mind basic accommodation at low rates, although sharing a bathroom with another room, I can recommend The Sutton Residence on 47th & Lexington.

We stayed there on our first trip a few years ago and have chosen to return this year. We'd have preferred Greenwich Village where we were last time, but the prices in October are crazy, when all we want is a bed for a few hours a night.

The flat rate has just risen to a whopping $160/night inc tax, which basically means we save around £100 a night for spending on ourselves rather than hotel overheads.
  • Not long till I take the girlfriend to NY, we go on the 26th! We're so excited despite this being my third time. This is one place you don't get sick of!

Does anyone have any experience with a cruise were we can be wined and dined? The girlfriend really wants to do it, despite me explaining that a holiday is to chill and enjoy ourselves.. not get dressed up and wear formal clothing just to have a meal!
