October is super pricey, because the weather is nice and everyone wants to go. I budget $200 for a hotel in February (when it is cheap), and for my October trip this year, that goes up to $350 a night.
Precise dates help, and actually telling us what hotel your mate suggested helps too.

As per post 14-18oct ( 4 nights) , the hotel recommended was hotel 57 I think
Damn I thought October would be out of season after summer break and before thanks giving , and last years hurricane
I hate paying more than £100-120 a night let alone £200 plus
As we intend to spend sleeping time only there..
We can afford £200 a night and I am not expecting 6*, I just somewhere clean and nice enough, a lot of places look like £20 a night b&bs in Blackpool or morecombe0 -

So maybe Manhattan is out of your budget, and you really should look at Long Island City. October is High Season, any time after the first weekend in September is, and it doesn't really get cheaper til the 2nd week of January.
Taxes make up 15% of your hotel budget, so £120 is $175 inc or $152 ex, which is very low, even for true low season.
Looking at your dates, Country Inn & Suites in Long Island City is available at $125 per night before tax.
Have you priced flights yet? You're not staying a Saturday Night, which could make flights so so expensive, as it looks more like a business trip, than a leisure trip.0 -
thanks M4RKM
flights already booked, paid £450 for manchester dusseldorf to toronto and back from Newark, plus £63 internal Buffalo-JFK..
I guess i hadn't factored too well the price of hotels in manhattan. looked at toronto and theres a massive choice at the £90-120 a night bracket. if we were to up our budget to £175-£200 inc tax
therefore $225-$260 a night plus tax. we may have better choice..
after booking hotels in london and hongkong in recent weeks its flabbergasting how expensive nyc is, I'm in Berlin this weekend were 4-5 *s are £50-120 .. i tend to prefer many budget holidays than one expensive holiday, so wasting money on a room i will purely sleep and shower in has never appealed...
i spotted a ramada for £400 plus tax in Queens, whats the aproximate travel time into manhattan, we'll be catching the subway and get daily or 3-4 day pass.. plan to hit the main sites, shopping etc, we've both been 5-6 year ago seperately.
my workmate gave me a site airbnb.com for private rentals i have read these are technically illegal in manhattan, but is it policed..0 -

private apartments are not technically illegal, they are illegal. It's the law.
Where in Queens is this Ramada? Queens is 10 times the size of Manhattan, some areas convenient, such as Long Island City gives you a 10 minute commute into Manhattan, and some not so much, such as near the airports, which will give you a 1 hour+ commute.
I've already demonstrated you can get a great hotel, and have a room in Long Island City for $125 per night, or £100 per night including taxes, which is fully cancellable!
There is no daily or 4 day passes for the subway. there is a pay per ride, or a 7 day pass.
NYC isn't expensive if you go in the cheap times of year, when you can get a great hotel at a low price. bear in mind that Berlin in March isn't a fair comparison to New York in October. Look at the high seasons in London, and high seasons in New York, and the prices are quite similar.0 -
Wow! Lots of useful information here, currently trawling through to search for a decent itinerary for our first visit to NYC in the first week of September. I'm sure I will be back with more questions but have just one first!
We are staying Monday-Friday at the Park South Hotel. I've done a quick search of the thread to see if there is any information about room upgrading but can't see anything specific to my question.
We have booked a standard room which according to reviews can be small. This doesn't bother us as we are seeing it as a place to rest our heads of an evening rather than anywhere to spend lots of time.
It seems a bit cheeky but as it will be my 30th birthday during the trip thought we could ask for a room upgrade but not sure if this is something that we do before we go or upon arrival? We don't really want to pay for it as the trip is already stretching our purse strings. Any advice appreciated! As I say its a bit of a cheeky request and the worst they can do is say no and keep us in our standard room but have heard that people have been lucky before.Wins
2009 - Polaroid Sunglasses 2010 - Year's supply lavazza coffee, Triumph limited edition "Underskin" bra and knicker set! 2011 - Ipod Nano, various Harris paintbrushes 2012 - Rubis Chocolate Wine 2013 - Wildfox Couture Necklace0 -

Hello
What a lovely way to spend your birthday! I bet you are excited,
Did you book direct with the hotel or a package?0 -
I think badgering my fiance for so long worked, he had the choice - trip to NYC or a pair of Christian Louboutin's. At least this way he gets to enjoy himself too!!
Its a package deal through BA.Wins

Ha ha fab... You never know you might get some CL's out there
You could try (or your fiance!) and email the hotel with any requests, such as room with a view etc and maybe slip in that its your birthday.
Upgrades are not guaranteed, and I have never been as lucky some. But did have an AMAZING view the last trip.
Hope you have a great time, you are staying in the area I love staying!!0 -
Hi
I was wondering if anyone can offer any advice / tips.
I've been to Manhattan several times, but one of my friends is going (for the first time) with her son who is a young adult with special needs.........He has learning difficulties, he's got good mobility but can be 'clumsy' and tire easily. He's not good in crowds
I was just wondering if there was anyone out there who had made the trip with someone who has special needs and had any specific advice to offer.
Thanks in advance0 -

Hi - I hope they have a good time
Not in the same boat but thought i'd mention about a wheelchair (if they need one as back up) we were lucky that the hotel we stayed at had wheel chairs for free. I was planning on hiring one and this time will check with the hotel first before doing so.
Also as mentioned Times Square is very busy, however in the morning is lovely (have been for breakfast) so that could be a potential for them instead of the evening.0
