Is it 390 per item or in total.

    JB

    Total.

If you bring back 1 item valued £400 you pay duty and VAT on the whole amount!

    Hi

I've just discovered that I'm heading to NYC on Friday 1st Feb for 4 days. Can anyone please tell me if anything "extra" special is happening in the city at that time?

I've done a quick check but thought I'd ask the experts.

Tbc, I'm thinking carnivals or parades or top bands playing, special offers at this time, that type of thing.

    Thanks in advance.

Buying a laptop and getting it past customs is simply a matter of making sure you throw every that makes it look new away.

Ditch the box. Copy any installation CDs onto the hard disk. Put some coffee stains on the lid etc etc etc. Maybe scuff up any labels on the bottom (it'll happen eventually anyway). Take an empty used case with you to bring it back in.

However, I am of the opinion that the savings in a US state with sales taxes are not enough to make it worth buying electronic goods.

cubegame - excellent, what a great idea, telling people to break the law. If they do get stopped and charged, are you going to offer to pay their duty for them then?

How about, on public forums, you state what is legal, and let people decide what they want to do.

An observation. Whilst there's loads of helpful stuff in this thread it is way too long to read through. It's a little frustrating! It would be nice to have a sub-board for NYC questions. Just saying.

It took ages to split UK and Foreign Holidays into each of their own boards. The Vegas thread is busier than this. (this is now in it's third year, and not at 300 pages yet).

Yes it's long, but just ask questions and we're more than willing to answer.

If anyone wants me to edit the first post with other useful info bits then let me know and give me the links to the single posts.

Hi greenface, thanks for responding. Yes, I've got the esta as I've travelled to the us recently.

I'm a huge fan of NYC and have enjoyed visiting quite a few times. This time however I'm travelling solo so am looking to fill my time and can be quite selfish! Having said that I particularly enjoy eating and drinking and doing that solo's a bit crap.

Will definitely be finding a bar to watch the opening England game of the six nations!

Slightly inappropriate but.. I'll give my 2 cents on the situation. I have definitely brought more than £390 worth of goods back to the UK and yes I am well aware that it is illegal.

Personally, I believe that I have already paid tax on the items I bought and don't quite fully understand why I should pay double tax on a gift for myself.

This is risky of course and I don't condone it whatsoever, I am more than prepared to suffer the consequences if caught.
