Hi everyone,
I am looking to go to new York with my brother next year and wanted some advice on flights and hotels. My dates are very specific, I'm looking to go 2nd-7th April 2013 or 3rd-8th April 2013 flying from Manchester.
I have found flights for £499 each return, is this a good price? Should i book now or wait later on in the year? This is the cheapest I could find and thought was reasonable but with it being my first time visiting I was unsure.
Also looking on advice for hotels. Again do I book now or wait till a later date? I am looking to spend £180 a night at the most. I have found the cosmopolitan hotel in TriBeCa for £889 for the duration of my trip. Is this a good deal or will prices go down later on?0 -
We are due to go to NY next week but we haven't made arrangements to get from NY to Boston yet. So wondering if anyone here has any good sugestions we staying in Queens then staying in think Bay Colony it says 5-10mins from Back Bay subway if that any help then we come back to fly from JFK.
There are 5 off us plus lots of luggage we don't want to spend too much on cost but want safe and reasonably comfortable. Someone mentioned the Greyhound buses but then someone else said no you don't want to do that so any advice will be most appreciated. TIA DH looked at train cost think he said about £600 which was alot added to holiday cost. Just txt him to double check on that.0 -
A Single fare on a train is the best way and that is normally around $49 if you book in advance. If you had planned right, you would have flown into JFK and out of BOS and the price of air fares is about the same (it is the reverse of what I'm doing in August).
As you've left it to the last minute, there probably isn't any cheap tickets left, and also you have to get back to NYC further increasing costs.
Bus is painful and slow IMO, but boltbus and megabus both travel from NYC to Boston, but without dates I can't find out what fares are available, but looking at Monday 4th June, you can get bus tickets for around $10 each, plus $1 booking fee with boltbus.

Thanks again M4RKM
Our flights were with the old airmiles so had to fly in and out of same airport which was a pity or we would have flew back from Boston as less hassle:(. DH is quite keen on the train as he had been told it huggs the coast so should be pleasant. Frustratingly he could have had tickets for 3 off us to get 50% off the train fare through work but forgot as we never have really used that perk much he has applied but looks like it won't get here on time:( he has chased it fingers crossed but not looking good. We will be going from NY on the 10th June returning to NY on the 15th June if that helps. So if these passes turn up we would probs do train and split cost between 5. otherwise cost wise will probs have to be bus:eek:. At the back of our mind was the hope DH would get his Driving Licence back he applied for it in March but they still haven't requested reports from his GP:mad:. Then we would have hired a car for the day and drove to Boston. He called them yesterday so know that is not going to happen now I had asked him to chase it a couple of weeks ago but he dragged his feet.
With the buses is there one better than the other and how long in general are we talking about on the bus the others will be fine they young but I will struggle with my hips if it very long. Do 4.5 hours on train to Scotland but there is probs more room than on a coach.0 -
We did the train a few years ago from Boton to NYC. Lovely journey and we did it first class loads of room for cases and really big seats. But it didn't cost anywhere near £600 ! well at least my wife didn't tell me if it did ............... all that beer money ! I am sure we caught it at the back bay station as we were staying close by.

Hi,
I am planning on a trip to New York on 22nd June for up to 8 nights in the USA.
Myself and my girlfriend, we had a good look around already but not booked anything yet. Was looking for any advice on prices and things to see in New York and also the possibilty to spend half our time in New York and then maybe fly travel somewhere close by, maybe a beach resort?
We have approx £2000 for flights and hotels.
We are perfeclty able bodied and able to use the Underground in New York or the over ground to travel futher a field.
Maybe Niagara Falls?
Any advice on best prices or advice on things to see?
I am reading through this long thread.
We will be flying out of any of the London airports.
Anyone know anything about these extra charges being charged my New York hotels on check out, and how to avoid them?
Thanks

If you're really set on a beach resort, then I'd go to a beach resort, and not do a half hearted NYC trip. In 4 days you're not going to see enough of NYC, and you'll be rushing around. 6 / 2 is a good split, however, then you're not doing the second location justice. You really need to decide exactly what you want to see.
Niagara Falls isn't a day trip, as it is over 400 miles away, much like Glasgow isn't a day trip from London. If you want to do it, look at doing 6 nights in NYC, and then 2 nights in Niagara Falls, however, after the second night, you'll have a lot of travelling to get back to NYC to get the flight home.
I'd encourage you to look at a map, and if you want to do 2 places, choose somewhere a bit more convenient. Boston is nearer, as it is only 200 miles away, and if you want the "beach" style, you could head to Cape Cod, however, if you're wanting to do NYC, then do NYC.
What do you mean by "extra charges being charged by New York Hotels on check out"? In my trips to NYC, I've never had any "extra charges" that I wasn't expecting, and I don't recall people on this thread saying that either. Can you clarify what you mean?
22nd June is fairly close now, a return flight for 8 nights in USA from LHR to JFK is £506 each. That leaves £988 for hotel, or in US money $1500 / $190 per night. That budget is tight for hotels in Manhattan, even before factoring in spending more on travel to go to a second destination.
To put things in perspective, i'm planning 8 nights, (4 in Boston and 4 in NYC), and my budget for hotels and flights/train is £2000, and I'm only 1 person, therefore, I save £500 minimum on flights, and have a bigger budget for hotels.
What do you want to see in NYC? Have you read a good guidebook to give you some ideas?
