Hi guys...long time reader of this thread...first time poster!

I want to surprise my gf by taking her to NY...for 4/5 nights...I can go anytime in 2013 if I am honest...when is the cheapest/best time to go?

I really want a decent hotel and direct flights (any London Airport) all for £1200ish

Anyone got any tips...or am I planning too early :)

Not sure of the cheapest time to go but I've been in Feb and April and I prefered April so much more. Feb was far too cold so I imagine the other winter months to be very cold too.

I went for 5 nights in April and booked it in November. We stayed at Yotel and flew with BA, it cost £1500.
What's gone will never come back. But it exists when you think of it ...

    Thanks Poor Johno!

Part of me thinks april 2013...but don't think I could get enough money together by then...as I want to make this the "special" trip :kisses2: (if you know what I mean - and haven't bought that yet either) lol.

If not I might have to wait until november 2013 :rotfl:

November is one of the most expensive months to visit NYC, particularly if your dates clash with the NYC marathon.

If you're really set on a beach resort, then I'd go to a beach resort, and not do a half hearted NYC trip. In 4 days you're not going to see enough of NYC, and you'll be rushing around. 6 / 2 is a good split, however, then you're not doing the second location justice. You really need to decide exactly what you want to see.

Niagara Falls isn't a day trip, as it is over 400 miles away, much like Glasgow isn't a day trip from London. If you want to do it, look at doing 6 nights in NYC, and then 2 nights in Niagara Falls, however, after the second night, you'll have a lot of travelling to get back to NYC to get the flight home.

I'd encourage you to look at a map, and if you want to do 2 places, choose somewhere a bit more convenient. Boston is nearer, as it is only 200 miles away, and if you want the "beach" style, you could head to Cape Cod, however, if you're wanting to do NYC, then do NYC.

What do you mean by "extra charges being charged by New York Hotels on check out"? In my trips to NYC, I've never had any "extra charges" that I wasn't expecting, and I don't recall people on this thread saying that either. Can you clarify what you mean?

22nd June is fairly close now, a return flight for 8 nights in USA from LHR to JFK is £506 each. That leaves £988 for hotel, or in US money $1500 / $190 per night. That budget is tight for hotels in Manhattan, even before factoring in spending more on travel to go to a second destination.

To put things in perspective, i'm planning 8 nights, (4 in Boston and 4 in NYC), and my budget for hotels and flights/train is £2000, and I'm only 1 person, therefore, I save £500 minimum on flights, and have a bigger budget for hotels.

What do you want to see in NYC? Have you read a good guidebook to give you some ideas?

Thanks for your time and reply.

No, I am not set on a beach resort. I am set on New York.

Maybe ‘beach resort’ was not such a good way of describing what I was looking for. What I was looking for was a ‘couple of days at the beach’ I heard that you can travel to the Hamptons quiet cheaply and I would also like to visit Coney Island.

What would you recommend? Any thoughts on these locations or any others?

Niagara Falls - may have to be postponed till next time!

I was told that it’s quite common for Hotel to charge for services that they offer – available to all but that you have not used?

I have ordered a guide book from Amazon so hopefully will be here before the end of the week. I would like to visit the usual tourist attractions:

    Empire State Building
    Statue of Liberty
    Rockefeller Center
    Staten Island Ferry
    Central Park

Maybe not so much the museums and art galleries and theaters.

We like to eat out at some nice places in New York, we like to walk around a lot and spend a lot of time outdoors.

Visit different neighborhoods. Places with a different feel/culture.
  • Hello Geoff

Some friends of ours wanted to do the falls about 4yrs ago. So we flew BA into JFK and they changed planes and flew to Buffalo, we just continued into NYC as we had done the falls whilst visiting Canada. Then they joined us in NYC later in the week, you don't need too many days at the falls as most of it is tacky touristy stuff. The Maid of the Mist and the walk in the tunnels is what we have done and is great. We stayed in Niagra on the lake away from the tack, but we had our own transport.

Our friends when they joined us in NYC were keen to use the tour buses (We were not !) but we joined in to keep everything sweet. It was Ok ........ but we prefer to get a metro card and travel the subway, as when you are on the tour bus you do get fed up of waiting in traffic/having to tip the guide etc. You start to think you could be managing your time better and being in more control.

As other people have said you need to print out a map , find the places you wish to visit and group the together. eg Sol/ferry, Wall st/Brooklyn Bridge, Trade centre site/City hall.

Looks like we are getting The Swans manager . Suppose he is young and ambitious . Played a few games before he took on a few roles at Chelski. Sack him if it turns messy couldnt be much worse than the last three years.
Sorry spend time i Boston or Washington rather than heading our for a few nights at Niagria IMHO.

We ate there last time we were there and the food was excellent. Nice atmosphere and comfortable. Am sure you will thoroughly enjoy your wedding meal there.
