What is this "Manhattan Vicinity" you refer to? Manhattan is an island that is22.7 square miles in area, 13.4 miles long and 2.3 miles wide.
You'll have to get the Subway, and head somewhere like Houston Street, and get to Katz, or 2nd Avenue Deli.
Oh really? I had no idea it was so big, I thought it was like a neighborhood or something...not everybody has been before:o.
No probs getting the subway for a deli....{Signature removed by Forum Team}0 -
I would go the opposite and say its not that big for such a "iconic" area. 13 and a half long and 2 and a half wide . You could walk around it in a day (try doing that to London or Paris) Its a borough in a very large state in a massive country. Even go to say the borough is split into sections (downtown, midtown, meatpacking, hells kitchen, soho, ues, uws etc etc) with areas between each sections. Get there find your bearings. I often use the chrysler & ESB as a point of reference and if i can see one and know where the other is regardless how many i have drank i know how to get around town. Enjoy NYC and dont worry if you dont see everything theres always a second or third time:cool: hard as nails on the internet . wimp in the real world :cool:0

P.S dont try to walk around it in a day thats just stoopid. But you could . Its a Marathon distance. 10/12 hours tops:cool: hard as nails on the internet . wimp in the real world :cool:0

Hi all
Enjoyed reading this thread, lot's of invaluable information!
Me and 6 friends are looking to fly to NY around 1st October and will be embarking on a road trip down to Texas.
We are struggling to find car hire (7 seater minimum) that we can pickup from NY and drop off in Texas. Ideally would like the most competitively priced provider possible.
Any suggestions?
Much appreciated.0 -

Then you drive back to your chosen airport for drop-off.
They currently have a sale on, and you get Nectar points.Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
seriously if there is 7 humans with 7 cases and 7 hand luggage i wouldnt look for a 7 seater i would consider 2 large cars minimum or a big big big mini bus. Thats over a 1.5k miles possibly 2k. But as savvy says savvy do. Good luck:cool: hard as nails on the internet . wimp in the real world :cool:0

Can anyone advise me about any ATMs that don't charge withdrawal fees please?
We have Halifax Clarity cards and plan to use them to withdraw cash, but would prefer to use an ATM that isn't going to make a charge, if we could.
I've done a search and looked online, but can't find out which machines will charge, and which won't (or maybe I'm just being thick:o).
We will be staying on E42nd between Grand Central Station and The Chrysler Building so an ATM near there would be most convenient.2.22kWp Solar PV system installed Oct 2010, Fronius IG20 Inverter, south facing (-5 deg), 30 degree pitch, no shadingEverything will be alright in the end so, if it’s not yet alright, it means it’s not yet the endMFW #4 OPs: 2018 £866.89, 2019 £1322.33, 2020 £1337.07

There is no such thing as a list of ATMs that don't charge. Do Halifax have an arrangement with any US Bank? I don't think they do, because if they did, they would tell you.
Therefore, most withdrawals from Bank ATMs will be around $3. If you use the small ATMs in McDonalds, or other convenience stores, these are normally between $1 and $3.
Bank Of America let Barclays withdraw fee free (but load the withdrawal, so that's pointless!).
The only truly fee free withdrawal I know of, is a MetroBank in the UK, using a TD Bank ATM. No loading, no conversion, no ATM Fee.
Even with your Halifax Clarity, You will still be charged interest from the date that the withdrawal is made, so the MetroBank Debit Card is still the winner when it comes to being used abroad.0 -

Thanks Mark, I guess that explains why I couldn't find the info anywhere
$3 will be fine as we plan to make one withdrawal rather than lots of small ones.
I know about the interest, but can minimize that with an online payment, it'll work out at pence and still give a better rate than changing before we go (we've got enough cash for the first few days).
MetroBank is a non-starter as we don't live/work/travel/ in or near London.2.22kWp Solar PV system installed Oct 2010, Fronius IG20 Inverter, south facing (-5 deg), 30 degree pitch, no shadingEverything will be alright in the end so, if it’s not yet alright, it means it’s not yet the endMFW #4 OPs: 2018 £866.89, 2019 £1322.33, 2020 £1337.07

Use the ones in McDonalds, they charge 99¢. Means you can make more withdrawals. Why pay $2.01 more than you need to?0
