  • So my questions are...

    1. I'm looking to go at the start of October for between 6-8 nights at a guess - does anybody have any idea on what's a good flight price from Manchester. Willing to travel for a better flight but seeing as I live in Manc, it'd make sense to fly from there!

    2. When do you think I should be booking said flight for optimum price. My GF and I have nearly saved £500 each so can book pretty soon if needed or are we better holding fire.

If you could help me on this, it'd be very much appreciated.

    Cheers!

Heyo - sorry for the repost but just checking to see if anyone has any advice on this at all? Currently flights are £600 + so I could do with any suggestions people have or average prices for October flights....

Go on, be a legend and help me out :)

You can't really average flight prices though. If I look back over the past 10 years of going to NYC, and averaged all the prices over, it'd be some weird figure that has no correlation of the flight prices today.

is £600 affordable to you? Have you ready what I've said a few posts ago about how expensive Manchester is this year?

Exact dates are key. Vagueness means I can't search for the dates you want to travel, and the length of your stay.

October isn't a cheap month. £570 is the cheapest I find for LHR, so at this moment in time, it is a reasonable amount to pay.

Flights to NYC are no longer cheap, they won't go down, but, even at £600, it's only around 9p per mile you're paying, so if you look at it that way, it is cheap

    Hello all.

Hopefully someone will be able to help me make a decision on this one as it's been a pain in my backside for a while now.

I'm off to New York for the first time in the middle of June and flying direct in to Newark (couldn't justify paying more for an indirect flight in to another airport), and arriving just after lunch.

I'd booked the hotel months in advance of buying the flights as I was waiting on the price to come down a bit, but my predicament as such is that we're having to travel from Newark all the way to Queens/Long Island City. I'm going with my girlfriend so no doubt we won't be travelling light enough for the buses and several subway changes that are required to get to our hotel via public transport.

My main question really is if anyone on here has had to make a similar journey or knows what the best option/method of transport is for getting to the hotel from the airport, and vice versa on the way home. I've looked at some car services but it's hard to tell which ones are legitimately good and which ones have over inflated reviews and ratings on some websites. And obviously taxis are always an option as well.

    Any help is much appreciated!

Cheers for the reply - very much appreciated. Average was probably the wrong word. Rather, I'll pay the going price but want to make sure I'm not buying too soon/too late.

I think we are settled on flying out on the 2nd and flying back on the 8th. Any help would be much appreciated.

Once all this boring stuff is finalised, I will definitely start picking people's brains for places to find amazing beers! Gotta get back to the Brooklyn Brewery.

If I was you id go for the AirTrain/NJTransit and Metro option. Depending on where in Queens you're heading it shouldn't take many metro changes once you've reached Penn Station. If you get a taxi im sure itll take a fair bit of time and as I'm not a fan of sitting in a taxi through traffic I wouldnt do it.

I went in April with the Mrs and her "luggage" and we did the AirTrain/NJTransit journey to Penn station and then had to walk 20 mins. It was fine.
What's gone will never come back. But it exists when you think of it ...

I've done Newark Penn Station to JFK using NJ Transit into Penn and then LIRR out of it, it wasn't a problem and a heck of a lot cheaper than road transport. I think I remember it taking about 2 hours which probably is about 30 mins more than doing it by car? .....And JFK is further out than Long Island City so using the subway from Penn like the other poster suggested should be okay. We had 2 large cases and handluggage with us. If you're reasonably fit it's not problem - although some subways stations have flights of stairs to street level.

    Enjoy your trip
  • Hello!
I am quite new to MSE but i'm looking for some advice on a New York trip, hoping this is the right place to post! Me and the Mr are off to a friends wedding in NY next year, very exciting!! My first time there :D So we are making it into our holiday too. The problem is that the wedding is two days after my mums 50th Bday and I want to see her on that day so we literally have only one date we can fly on! That being the 4/4/13, the flights are just becoming available now with the cheapest i've found at around 950 from Heathrow to JFK, with delta. Should we book now or wait? We are thinking now because if they become more expensive its not like we can just go a different day! Any advice will be much appreciated :) x

Its a Thursday so your mums b/day is a Wednesday why not partay on the weekend before then you have a better choice. But saying that if your staying over the weekend barring any massive fuel or tax hike you will get better prices after xmas & Jan Sales for April

If you're only flying to NYC, flights are always expensive. Return flights are always cheaper, and return flights that include a Saturday night are cheaper still. Also, there is a slim chance you'll get in the country without a return ticket. I know you're coming back, but you haven't told me, so I have to assume that you're not looking at return flights. :)

If you're looking at a return flight for £950 for 1 person, that includes a Saturday night stay then it is daylight robbery.

I've just done a search on kayak.co.uk for a flight on the 4th April 2013, returning on the following monday, and the cheapest I've found is £502 per person, flying Iberia/BA.
