Craft Beer is big in New York, and you can get great beer in many bars if you know where you're going. However, as you're asking for "real ale" I can only assume you mean warm, 4% bitters, served on cask, rather than exciting 6 - 10% beers, IPAs, Stouts, Porters, Saisons, Single Hopped Beers, Barley Wine Beers, the list goes on.

If it is the former, than you will be disappointed, Cask beer is really a UK only thing.

There are a few places in NYC with cask ale pumps (The Blind Tiger in Bleecker Street comes to mind).

Is there any good or bad time to book a hotel in NYC? I've never been and we've just booked our flights to las Vegas and new York for our honeymoon in April 2013. So now just wondering when should I be booking a hotel?
  • A good time to book is when they are cheap and the bad time is when they are not ! But we always make sure when we book you can cancel without charge. Then if it becomes cheaper nearer the date or you see another hotel you fancy you can cancel and book again !

And Ginger Man have one too. DBA in Williamsburg too.

So, we've got a list of 3 pubs with a grand total of 4 cask pumps (1 each in Ginger Man and DBA, and I'm guessing 2 in Blind Tiger), and about 70 Keg. I think my first comment of Cask beer being a UK thing still applies. Keg is King in the US.

If you're unsure, book something you like and can afford that is fully cancellable, and then keep checking, just in case there is a better offer nearer to the time.

April isn't cheap, it's when the weather starts to get better, and the everlasting NYC High Season starts.

Do you live in Southern Ireland or the United Kingdom? It is your final destination that is key, not a country that you stop over in.

    Ireland - http://www.revenue.ie/en/customs/leaflets/pn1878a.html#duty-free

    UK - http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/customs/arriving/arrivingnoneu.htm#1

Ginger Man used to have two though it's years since I've been there so they may have cut down to one. Blind Tiger's got two as you say. Anyway, my point was not to dispute that the vast majority of beer in NYC (or the States) is keg.

    Hi,

I'm new here and looking for some advice on travelling to New York City. Dates are provisionally 3rd-10th Jan 13. Although, I can do anything as late as returning on the 12th. Looking to go for a week. The cheapest flights I can find at the moment are £467 is it worth holding out till not long before and if so, how long before? Also, accommodation recommendations would be great. The trip will be for my 21st (going with my boyfriend) so want something memorable as always wanted to go to NYC but also something which isn't too expensive. I'd say overall budget for flights and accommodation is around £850-900pp. Another thing, is it cheaper to get a bundle on expedia or last minute than it is to book separately?

    Thanks,
    Hannah
