Do any flight experts think I will have to pay £500+ to get to New York on 14 September returning 21 Sept? That's the current price (from Heathrow) and it seems an awful lot.
Any ideas? Could it be worth waiting to book? I don't know how the pricing is likely to work.
Thanks!0 -
I've not stepped into a nightclub in NYC, I've also not stepped into a nightclub in over 5 years by my reckoning. I'm a huge barfly. I try new beers, speak to new people, and make new friends, that's what I do.
There are always live bands playing, and it's a totally different atmosphere to the UK, as headliners normally start at 11pm, rather than finish at 11pm. Even though we all speak the same language, the cultural differences are vast.
There are Broadway Shows, off Broadway Shows, and off off Broadway shows, all of which are scattered around the whole of Manhattan, so see some theatre, that's still nightlife. I can't honestly believe that people will go to NYC and not want to do anything in an evening, regardless how exhausted they've made themselves after a long day of sightseeing.
Anyway, onto the hotel search for near Central Park. As the Salisbury was mentioned, I've checked that, and it is coming up at $175 per night before tax, so just slightly out of your budget that you've set.

When nightlife is referred to I immediately think clubs and suchlike which my daughter is not bothered about much (i suspect han was referring to clubs rather than nightlife in general). Obviously my dd does not sit around her hotel room doing nothing in the evening in NY! There is still plenty to do such as restaurants, bars, shows etc and she finds staying near central park provides her with many options.
The point I was making was that staying near central park still gives you easy access to most things you would want to do.0 -

Friday's are more expensive, you change by a day to fly thurs-thurs, and it's suddenly £465 for the same flights. Supply vs Demand.
Are you going to have to pay £500, I think it is a fair price for high season in NYC.0 -
Thanks. Looks like that's how much it's going to be. I was just surprised by how much more it is than when I went a couple of years back.0

try the petrol or diesel compared to a few years back in this country. shocking . £500+ are becoming the about norm for a decent flight on a decent day. London used to be cheaper but with supply & demand they are now closer together in prices ATM. Mankchester have less direct flights than londbum:cool: hard as nails on the internet . wimp in the real world :cool:0

M4RKM just want to thankyou for your help before our holiday to NY/Boston. Well we have returned and what an experience it was great:j:beer:
We stayed at Country Inn & Suites which you recomended very happy with it. We booked 2 king city view rms we were on the 7th floor the view was amazing:j. There were lots of reviews negative about the breakfast ie small and long que's well we never had a problem we made sure we were down between 6.30/7.00 by 7.30 yes it was getting busy. Although it was the same every morning it was plentiful and real handy to fill a hole and allow us to have one meal a day later on so saving on cost. You had 3 different cereals, hot option which was egg and looked like a sausage but tasted like beefburger, pastries, yogurts, toast, doughnuts(think they got a deal with Dunkin Doughnuts near by) make your own waffles DS3 loved this, Bananas, coffee machine, orange apple cranberry and water to drink. Unlike most places where it is frowned upon abt you taking things away it was infact encouraged and we took some bananas for our room when we come back later on in the day. Free wifi a bonus rooms good for the price plenty of room. AND DID I SAY THAT VIEW WAS AMAZING:j:j:jwe could see several of the diferent bridges to the right freedom tower to the left empire state and chrysler amazing at night you just wouldn't get that staying in Manhatten. So quick to get into Times Square, subway short stroll (5mins).
Total cost for both rooms including tax for 7 nights $2097.34:j
Pity we never got the £500 deposit back that we paid on the other apartment which they said they would:( lesson learned I suppose.
PS we easily managed a roll away down for our son in our room just folded it back up in the morning no probs still plenty of room0 -
Glad you had a good time . What was the view like did you say ? hard as nails on the internet . wimp in the real world :cool:0

Hi all:wave:
We will have 3 days in NYC at the end of next month, at the start of a 2 week trip. We have a list of things we want to see/do, split into 3 geographical areas, one for each day.
My question is about ferry tickets for Ellis Island. I've head that the queues for walkup tickets are ridiculous and planned to book tickets in advance before we went, but now I'm wondering whether we wouldn't be better to just arrive at Battery Park early (we're always awake at stupidly-early o'clock the first couple of mornings after flying to the US anyway) - would the queues still be that awful first thing in the morning?
The advantage would be that we would be better able to judge the weather on the day. Also, I'm a bit reluctant to book tickets for anything for the first morning of our trip as I've been caught out before with a flight delayed by 24 hours and missing the event we'd bought tickets for.
Also, we want to visit the memorial fountains at the WTC the same day as we do the Ellis Island trip and as we've got to book the day/time for that anyway should I just pick a day and book the ferry?
Are there any other advantages to booking before we go?
I know that I'm really over-thinking thisand I'm going round and round in circles with it
I'd be interested in anyone else's experience of this - good or bad - to try and help me make a decision. My DH & DD are useless, they just tell me to do whatever I think is best. The problem is... I don't know!

I would certainly say that if you are booking tickets for the memorial then book tickets with statue cruises for the liberty trip for the same day, we have always gone for the 9am sailing. Then you can tie in your visit to the WTC as it is not far from battery park. We did both on the same day and it worked out really well.0
