Hi all...
Tried trawling through the pages but can't find any info.
Me and the Mrs are flying to NYC on October 16th for the firstleg of our US travels, and would like to know what other people have paid for a "budget" hotel?
The one we're looking at is the Pod Hotel for $179 a night...but some friends have said that even that seems expensive?
Does anyone know of any decent, yet not bank breaking hotels that are in a safe area and that are either not too far away from the sights, or close to a subway that will not take too long to get there?
Completely open to hostels, as long as they have a private double room.
Our budget will stretch to $180 max per night but we want to get the best for our money! We are staying for 7 nights!
Thanks!!0 -

$127.50 per night is what you can get the Country Inn & Suites for in Long Island City. No one on this forum is going to recommend hotels that are not safe, mainly because NYC is safe. I don't know where this "must be safe" kinda statement always comes from. Long Island City is a short 1 station hop on the Subway into Manhattan.
Also, there isn't a single hotel that is close to all the sights. That's mainly because Manhattan is an island that is 13 miles long, and 2 miles wide. That's before we look at other boroughs that have attractions in them, you need to look at using the subway to get around.
If you want to stay in Manhattan, then $200 should be the minimum budget, (bear in mind prices you see for hotels still need tax adding to it, which is around 15%), it isn't cheap to stay in NYC, hotels are at 80% occupancy most of the time, so they can charge expensive prices. There are few legal hostels. If your friends think $180 is expensive, then maybe you should ask them where to stay... $250 is an ideal budget for decent hotels in NYC per night, so I have no clue why they think $180 is expensive.

I understand the need and want to help people, but please ensure your advice is actually useful to people asking for it.
The OP wants a budget hotel, exact dates have been given, and a quick 30 second search, shows that the above hotel is $274.63 per night before tax. This is WAY over the OPs budget of up to $200.
Also, there are ZERO tube stations in New York City. London has a Tube, Chicago has a Metro, Boston has the T, San Francisco has the Muni, and New York City has a Subway. If you ask for a Metro in New York, you'll get sent to the Metro North Railroad, if you ask for a Tube, then you'll get a confused look!

We stayed at the Eddison Hotel just off Times Square. It was booked for us as part of a package. Rooms are a bit basic but the location was fabulous, just a 1 min walk from Times Square. About 7 blocks from Penn Station and Madison Square Garden. Quite a walk to/from Ground Zero but the subway is good. I don't like the tube in London but managed ok in New York (its all the mind lol!)The Cabbage

Hi M4RKM
I wonder can you help me with a query I have on the cost of the above please.
On reading through old posts I've come across the information below updated in Jan 11.
Public Transport
AirTrain again, this time it takes you to Newark Liberty International Station. It takes 20 minutes, and costs $5.50.
Purchase a ticket from NJ TRANSIT or Amtrak and the AirTrain Newark fee of $5.50 will be included
Then from Newark Liberty International Station, NJ Transit trains into Manhattan.
The same question is asked over and over again on Tripadvisor and the advice is that the cost is $12.50. Are these different routes or has the cost of the above increased to $12.50 do you know?
I'd appreciate any information you can offer in reaching Manhattan from Newwark by the cheapest method. There will be four of us travelling we arrive around 10.30am from MCO into Terminal C.
Hope you can help me.0 -

The $12.50 includes the $5.50, but the AirTrain fee is $5.50, which is what I'm referring to. Amtrak and NJ Transit are different costs, NJ Transit makes it $12.50. Maybe my wording is slightly bizarre, but it's what is said on the AirTrain Website.
Should I update it to make it clearer?0 -

If the cost from EWR to Manhattan is $12.50 in total then maybe so.
Thanks for clarifying this for me.0 -
I think my reasonings are that the $5.50 doesn't change as often as the NJ Transit / Amtrak fares... also, Amtrak is more expensive than NJ Transit...
