Well, we have gone and done it again.

Booked for February, flying from Birmingham for £375 each and looking at hotels. 6 of us are going, and it will be the first time we have taken the kids.

I am very excited, but also a bit nervous.

Hoping to take the kids to ESB, Ground Zero memorial Gardens, Staten Island Ferry. Gutted that the basketball is still in lockout, and doesn't appear to be reaching a deal so may take them to the ice hockey aswell.

Anyone got any tips for travelling with kids? ( they are 9 and 12)

    Oooh Nice
Where are you looking at staying?

Have a look at Timeout NYC http://newyork.timeout.com/

Also consider the Natural History Museum and Top of the Rock and shopping in Soho.

Pah, the price is wrong. Just tried to book, it takes you to continental website with price in dollars, and when you convert it is £1436, so a lot more than £336 each.

Really gutted, thought they were fab prices. Nowhere else could touch it, tried Continental direct on their website, Kayak and Expedia. Now I know why as the price was obviously wrong. :(

This is why I never recommend skyscanner as there are always too many errors on their website. Kayak is the only one I use, and I've never mention any others. I've had bad experiences with skyscanner showing prices before tax, and now tax isn't just tax but a whole lot else.
    Thanks for those replies.

1 - Thanks for that, i'll keep looking daily, hubby is 6 2" i was told american airlines is basic and that it would be very cramped, and that continental airlines is better.

Totally agree. I'm 6'4 and had a window seat for the flight out of there. It was such a squeeze for me to get in and out of the seat I really didn't feel comfortable. I've flown Delta mainly before, and will be going back to them. I don't like CO as they charge for Beer on board, and fly into an airport nowhere near where I stay in NYC.

EDIT - I've done a bit of research, and CO have recently re-configured all their planes and they have the same measley 31" pitch that AA / BA / Virgin offer on TATL flights. Only some KLM flights and the majority Delta offer more than this, with 32" - 34" being the norm on their TATL flights, but it is still worth researching. For tall people, it really is worth considering what leg room you do get, as 31" is uncomfortable for an 8 hour flight. It is amazing how much more comfortable eve 1" of legroom is.

At the moment we have a cancellable reservation with the Affinia 50. It was a good price ( £810 for two junior suites for 4 nights with $100 hotel credit on top). Also, it means that every person has their own bed ( except me and my husband obviously)

Just a bit of a culture shock as I have never been with kiddly peeps before.

Me too as they had better flight times. Have flown back once via Newark it was in the early hours so didn't see much scenery wise on the journey.

There is more to NYC than Manhattan!

I've been to the Affinia 50 before back in 2008. It's not the greatest location as it is in a really corporate area of Manhattan. There is not much to see and do (in a tourist sense) nearby, and there is a bit of a lack of choice to dine for breakfast or a quick grab and go deli kinda thing. While the price is right, (and 0.5 miles difference between EWR (15.9) and JFK (15.4);) ), I would keep a look out and you might get a hotel in a better location nearer to Feb when the great cheap deals appear.

To be honest I don't think the hotel choice is going to change. Because of the kiddly peeps our needs are a bit different. We need a kitchen or kitchenette, and the luxury for us of having a bad each is the icing on the cake.

Planning on having breakfast in the room where possible to save on a little cash.

Does anyone have any personal experience of the bedbug problem in NY?
I stumbled across a website where people report hotels where they've been infested and I wish I hadn't, it's starting to put me off staying anywhere!

We went last year when the bedbug problem was supposed to be rampant and we had no problems at all. I expect there will be hotels with the problem, like anywhere in the world, but I didn't come across it, and I doubt that I had the only uninfested room in the city
