I've just found this thread, and working my way through reading it.
We've decided to go to new york, never been before.
Want to go end of sept next year as it's hubbys birthday and we want to be there.
we want to fly direct from manchester.
I've found flights for last week sept with continental airline at a cost of £1200, i'm not sure on prices so is this dear, and should i wait a bit longer and see if the price comes down?
Also what temp would it roughly be end of sept,?
Is a week long enough?
Been searching for a decent hotel, and i'm getting quotes from £1200 - £1500 for a week.
thanks for reading and replying.
Hi there
Not an expert but I'd say wait a while and keep an eye on prices. Have you looked at packages? To compare prices in the meantime
what hotels have you been looking at? What star or location preference do you have?
I'd say a week is long enough I have been twice (going again in few weeks) and find once you get to know the city navigating on other trips is easier and quicker!
check out trip advisor I think the temp is decent in September, but hey its the weather and they had snow this October!
I'd recommend signing up for travel zoo New York they email hotel and entertainment offers regularly and also groupon0 -
Hi trying to buy a timeout nyc but can't find any in north London does anyone buy it regularly?
I know its online, but find the magazine better to navigate0 -

Wow, so many questions.
1 - £600 per person is expensive. I flew towards the end of September 2011, and paid £425 return with American Airlines. I booked the flight in May. You're really looking far too early.
2 - google historical temperatures. My experience of September is that it is anything between 35c and about 16c, but that's over a number of years going.
3 - No. I've been going to NYC for at least 1 week a year for the past 10 years. I've still not seen it all..
4 - Please post nightly rates. You're really going to be looking for rates around $200 per night for the cheapest of places, which for 7 nights will be working out at £1000 including taxes. You say "decent" but one persons decent is another persons slum. Tell us what hotel you've seen. IMO, you're really looking far too early for next September.
I'll be heading to NYC in September again, but won't start looking til April

Thanks for those replies.
1 - Thanks for that, i'll keep looking daily, hubby is 6 2" i was told american airlines is basic and that it would be very cramped, and that continental airlines is better.
2 - these days who know what the weather is, but lots of sites have different temperatures.
3 - guess the week will be long enough for our 1st visit.
4 - I've only done a quick search last night, my sister stayed at the Broadway plaza and they liked it, i've searched for it, and it comes up at £1400 for a week.
Other hotels that have been recommended to me are
the bibary
casablanca
new yorker
the wellington
ink48
So i've plenty of time to do a search on them.
We was looking at doing 2 weeks a week in new york and a week on a cruise up to canada, but that's looking a bit out of our price range.
So we was told that you can do niagra falls fly there and stayed over night.
Basically we only decided the other night and don't know nothing about america or new york.
I've just been given a book called DK eyewitness travel new york, so if i read that i may get a bit more of a idea.
sorry for all the questions.0 -
bottom 3 are normally the same price give or take and often deals on expedia/last minute com sites can work out cheaper than a diy with discounts . Never really had a really better flight than another but i always try to fly direct . Rather get there in under 8 hours (anyway ) than a comfotable 13 hours through amsterdam or worse philly been with Delta/AA/KLM & Virgin. only one not direct and the extra change was a pain (with kids & wheelchair user) I dont know the top 2 and not stayed in the bottom 3 but have checked them out and would choose Ink/welly/New yorker for a basic location choice but all are in a decent location and i would enjoy the new yorker for its historic past. Enjoy NYC:cool: hard as nails on the internet . wimp in the real world :cool:0

Tipping does normally work but you have to be bold but discreet. 4 nights new yorker. Before you check in proper pull the main check in manager aside give him your passport show him IT IS YOUR BIRTHDAY have a $50 inside ask them if there is a chance of a nice room, with a nice view & smile.
Just curious whether anyone tried greenfaces suggestion for an upgrade?0 -
Just curious whether anyone tried greenfaces suggestion for an upgrade?
Hi, i've not tried this way but have emailed the hotel and they upgraded me to a better room/ view for 10 dollars + taxes a night over 6 nights costing just over the 50 slipped in a passport.
I just returned home this morning and would recommend the New Yorker to anyone that enjoys that movie star styling from the 50's era, my room had been redecorated recently, had a lovely deep tub and a new bed, as well as tasteful dark wood and silvery fittings and fixtures. But the selling point that got me was the great skyline , i could see from the Met Life building right round as far as MSGarden. At night it is sparkly and at sunrise its like a modern Stone Henge as the sun rises behind the view.
I also walked The High line on this visit early morningish and the views along the streets lit by the rising sun was uplifting for me.
I'd also like to add as a woman travelling alone , i felt safe in all the parts of town i visited, and found people to enjoy sharing their city with you. Go ahead and get the basics flight and accommodation sorted and the rest can be an adventure that can't be fully planned or time tabled.:D0 -
No it isn't realistic. I paid £350 for a flight in March 2011, so with the recent increases in fuel costs, and increases in passenger duty, then getting a flight for that cost again will be a tough call. In a busier month like May, it makes it, in my opinion, impossible.
I think you'll be looking around the £425-£450 price range for a flight to NYC in May 2012.

OMG, just checked skyscanner today (check most days) and the dates I want are £336 with Continental.
Presume this is the cue for me to book NOW???
Anyone know best way to book, is there any discounts/cashback available booking via continental or any other site?0 -

Not that I know of have you tried googling ?
have you booked it yet?0 -
Pah, the price is wrong. Just tried to book, it takes you to continental website with price in dollars, and when you convert it is £1436, so a lot more than £336 each.
Really gutted, thought they were fab prices. Nowhere else could touch it, tried Continental direct on their website, Kayak and Expedia. Now I know why as the price was obviously wrong.0
