thanks i am soo excited, this is the furthest i have ever been, and we have been planning it for at least 6 years!

I was considering applying for a prepaid mastercard or something that is visa, i have read on the MSE site that this works?

i think its just a back up as i am scared of being stranded!

    thanks for your advice xx

Ah fab! When are in 2013 are you going? Where are you looking at staying? I hope you get some great deals, are you going to book flights and hotel separate?

I'm not sure about the prepay, as I have never used one, but I'm sure someone else would be able to help

The first time went there were 7 of us in 4 rooms and we all didn't have cards so used $ not sure if they were that impressed, but there wasn't anything we could do.

That's a good time to go for deals I think.

I have booked various ways, 1st did a package with virgin.
2nd time flights with B.A. And booked with hotel direct.

Going in a few weeks and booked with B.A. Holidays with a great deal (in my opinion anyway lol)

I'd say keep any eye out for sales and sign up to travelzoo.com for nyc as the regularly email deals for hotels at great prices.

What I do is look at last-minute.com, expedia, B.A., virgin There are more, but those are my preferred . And then I price up individually looking at best flight times and hotel for my £.

I personally wouldn't go with high street travel agents as a 1st option as I have found overall prices to be dearer when compared with others.

if you are used to booking holidays then you may like the separate option it does take a while to search for what you want, but that's half the fun!

    No probs !

I usually take cash and have a card for emergencies (for the shopping kind of emergency lol) as back up. Although I don't have that much free money on them anyway!

However my mum for example doesn't have a credit card and has been ok I guess I was with her but I think you will be ok! As she has never asked me to use my card.

Re the cash looking at the prepay sounds like a good idea for security.

    what's your budget?

This is an example of what B.A. Have at the moment for December

    http://www.britishairways.com/badp/common/sortingFilteringPaging.do

A friend of mine went in March this year for I think £500 each in 3-4 star hotel via B.A. Or last minute.com

Prices tend to be that bit cheaper in Jan to March, I think because of the weather and maybe post Christmas?

Spending money, sounds alright but I don't know what you plan on doing you can eat reasonably cheaply or expensive in the city.

Do you plan on doing much shopping and the sights etc?

I love walking so tend to walk lots there As its so magical and the bus the odd cab if we are in a group. Never been on the subway, just my preference!

I am still not sure what will be enough spending money. we have about $2100 (between 2 of us). Everything is booked and paid for but no food is included, so we have to buy food for 7 days. (6 nights we are going for). We don't plan on doing much shopping and what we want to do sight seeing wise is the top of the rock, Empire State, (free) ferry to have a look at statue of Liberty and a hop on and off bus tour. We want to also have a carriage ride in central park and grap a couple of taxis around.

Do you think this is a reasonable amount for spending money??? x
