We stayed in one of these illegal rentals a few weeks ago, although it only became illegal between booking it and going and we didn't even know about the change in the law until just before we went. Anyway, we had no problems at all and the landlord couldn't have been nicer or more helpful. We read all the doom and gloom warnings before we went and were expecting to be turned back at the airport if they asked the wrong question or maybe be subject to a SWAT-style raid at any time, but our reality was that holiday life continued entirely as normal.

Having said that, I wouldn't take the chance again if only to avoid the stress of worrying that you might be one of the probably very small percentage who's caught out.

Vacation apartment rentals have been illegal in NYC for years. There have been raids on apartments for years, often seeing some poor unknowing tourist thrown out and having to hunt down a hotel.

The only change that was made recently was closing some loopholes that some where trying to use to get around the law, such as claiming building where no residential.

Its different departments. The issues with getting booted out lies with the other residents of the apartment block that you're staying in. The more they complain, the quicker they'll come around to investigate and evict. As VestanPance has said, apartment rentals have been illegal for years, and the May 2011 law was an amalgamation of other laws into something easier to manage, and evict people who are breaking the law.

Yes, you were subject to a raid at any time, because you were breaking the law, which you fully knew when you were going. That isn't anything to be proud of in my opinion.

    Hi all,

Just bringing up the mood a bit... I have 15 sleeps until I have my first ever long haul flight and visit to NEW YORK CITY!!!!!!! :j:j:j:j:j

I am so excited I could cry! New York is everywhere at the moment and I can not belive I will be ther on New Years Eve! Bring on the cold and crowds I'm ready for ya!

I have more spending money that I thought and in total we should have about $2300 between 2 of us for all food and sightseeing etc for 6 nights.

Can anyone advise me on the New York Tax and residency fee that hotels charge? Do they do this at the end of the stay etc?

Woooo Hooo! Me too! (the sleeps bit) :j:j
Have fun! What hotel are you staying at?
Did you book direct with the hotel then?
When I have booked directly with a hotel in the past the taxes were included in the final price (upfront) I paid the bill on checkout.

If you've booked direct with the hotel the tax is 14.75% plus an additional $3.50 per night room tax. If you booked through the likes of Expedia and many other booking sites often the tax is calculated into your quote.

Check what you where quoted it should list if the price included tax or not. Most hotels will take a credit card as security, but the bill is normally settled when checking out.

    Hello

Just to say, there are reservations available for the 911 memorial today (I just checked) if anyone missed out on reserving a ticket and you are going to NYC in the next couple of weeks.

Me and my Fiancee fly out Christmas day for our first visit to New York. We're also out there for New Year. We have a list of the main things we'd like to see do but will probably spend alot of the time just walking around and seeing where we end up.

    13 days!!

any advice or feedback would be much appreciated.

Spent about a minute looking at your site and already found one piece of duff info

Fixed price for 3 people from jfk to manhattan in a cab? Think you'll find its a fixed price for 4 people or 5 in a mini van.
Live each day like its your last because one day you'll be right
