Lol - Well I didnt go to far into the details.. However I did see Virgin Flights leaving from London Gatwick arriving mid afternoon on 31st had not picked a hotel yet but I think the generic Wellington brought it in at £950 for 5 nights - the flight times home were good too!

I didn't know that thanks:beer: I think it only goes to WTC but that's only a few blocks walk. Thank you

    Definitely goes to Chambers St

Looking at Google maps, putting in Cosmopolitan Hotel it's about a block away from the A train Chambers St - nearer the 1,2 & 3 line, but not far at all.

We've always got the subway when coming into JFK - loads cheaper than a taxi and not all that much longer in time, after negotiating the traffic!

    Have fun!

Wellington £828 from LHR for 5 nights from 31/12 on Expedia with Virgin going out at 12.00, returning on the 21.15, so a nice time to leave.
  • Ah I'm flying into Newark:D Flying back from JFK so will bear that in mind.

OOPS! :o didn't spot that, but as you say maybe useful for the return leg!

Posted on the shopping forum, but not sure that's much used any more. Any idea which newspaper is best for coupons for shopping discounts whilst in NY?

An American friend said to get one on the Sunday, but not sure which one. I'm guessing a tabloid type, rather than the NY Times.

I always have a good scour around Google first and sign up to an email from the stores I go to regularly, but thought this sounded a good option as I know the Americans are into their coupons much more than us.

Could I have people's views on the Hop on Hop off bus tours please. I am going to NY in December and wondered if they were worth it. Just trying to find ways to fit in as much as possible. Thanks in advance.

I know you will have people telling you to avoid them and that the subway is a better way of getting around but I have to say the first time we went to NY we used the hop on buses and found them incredibly good for a first time visit. You get to see loads of places which you would miss on the subway. OK it takes a lot longer but for us it worked really well. It also gave us a good idea of hwhere things were generally.

Help with a WOW night (or even day)!!

I'm off to New York in 4 weeks with my Mum for a week.

So excited to be going - we're going to do all the typical sight seeing, shopping and catching a show but I want to organise something special to do as a suprise so she really remembers our trip as I don't think she will ever go back.

Be really greatful for any suggestions.

    Thanks x x x

Someone mentioned a meal at the River Cafe but then someone else also said it's not worth it and there are better things to do (funnily enough they didn't tell me what!!)

River Cafe is very expensive and we did not find the food that impressive. £300 for 3 of us thereabouts without alcohol! However the view is incredible, you can see the City over the river coming to life at night and lighting up. You can also sit on the terrace under the Brooklyn Bridge and watch the bridge light up but it's a very expensive view!

Daughter went to The View this year which is the revolving restaurant, its at the top of the Marriott hotel in Times Square. She reckons the food was the best she had on the trip. The Boathouse in Central Park is pretty good and the food was good and again it is in a lovely setting on the lake - we always book up before we depart as these are all popular restaurants (I think the River Cafe books up months in advance). The Boathouse is definitely one I think you should do.

    Hi
I have been to the View for a glass of champers only and thought it was great for a drink, especially as we had a wndow seat and you can watch NYC sparkle away at night. Also had cocktails at the Rainbow Room (top of Rockafeller) which was great with views of the ESB and a pianist playing. Finally, there is a fantastic roof top outdoor bar at 530 Fifth Avenue. You can almost touch the ESB from the chairs and blankets and dressing gowns are provided so you are not chilly. This was a highlight of the trip for my sister and I - can recommend the hot cherry cider! Enjoy.
PS - have eaten at the Boathouse but indoors which is cheaper, more basic food, no waiter service and with no need to book but, putting aside the windows, is the same view. X
