Hi All,
I am off to New York on the 27th December for 1 week. (First time!).
Would you recommend me booking my sight seeing / tours etc before I go or when I get there?
Also, are the majority of things as normal at the time of year in New York City. (other then new years eve etc)
Any hints or tips for going at this time of year would be helpful.
Thanks, :j
Hi we're not long back from or first time in NY and we booked (nearly) everything before we went.
We only went for 5 days though and booked: SATC tour, Rockafella centre, Off-Broadway show, Ferry sight seeing tour, VIP tickets to a nightclub and evening meals for most of the days we were there.
We didn't book the natural history museam, but got our tickets there (the queue for pre booked was about the same as picking up on the day)
We also seen the public library and grand central station as well.
So I would recommend booking most things before you go, but there are things that you can do without having to book if you leave some spare time while you are there.0 -

I'm probably the opposite of this and don't book anything. Last visit I did the TOTT, Broadway show, nightclub, walking to Brooklyn etc. The theory was that I could choose what to do depending on the weather, my mood etc etc and that worked out for me. Maybe Xmas time is busier though but you might have a bit more flexibilty that way. Enjoy.0 -
Hi
Can anyone offer any advice please about twin centre honeymoon destinations combining NYC with somewhere suitably scenic /peaceful / romantic? This is a first time trip so we're starting from scratch and welcome any advice and suggestions!
The trip will be the last 2 weeks in July 2012 and we know this isn't the best time to visit, temperature / humidity wise, but have got our heart set on it!
Flights will be from Manchester to JFK followed by 4 or 5 nights in NYC and we're hoping to book a fairly upmarket hotel, maybe The Library / London NYC / Morgans.
We trying to avoid hiring a car so the second area would need to be somewhere easily accessible by train / private car service and that stay would probably be for 9 / 10 nights. We're looking for somewhere to really unwind, maybe with spa treatments, lake / beach views etc We've checked out The Hamptons / Long Island and also some hotels on the Hudson River but don't seem to be able to find anything suitable.
Return flights will also be from JFK. Total budget would be around £4000 including flights and hotels.
Can anybody help??!!
Many thanks

Working the budget will be difficult for what your looking for and for how long.Would you consider a trip to and around Niagra Falls or Lake Michigan. Another favorite and a place thats much cheaper in the summer than the winter but has lots of things to do all year around is Banff (better by plane to get there but dont dismiss). If your on a plane though think maybe Miami or Keys etc. Have a great Honeymoon. hard as nails on the internet . wimp in the real world :cool:0

Thanks all!!!
I know the it is going to be hectic and I am prepared for that. Living in central London means I am somewhat used to it! lol... I knowthe prices will be mega but I am prepared for that....
I am aiming for about $2000 for 2 people for 6 nights... I am not really going for the shopping... more for the sighseeing and the experience. We have booked to stay in Times Square and I am ready for the long day on New Years Eve but this is what I am going for! :-) And the $2000 is after I have booked hotel & flights... and not including the tax etc I have to when I leave the hotel as I have that seperate.
I only have a few things that I REALLY want to do. Top of the rock, Empire state building, go to the Statue of liberty (~I think it is currently closed for works but just happy to be in its presence) and to have a stroll around central park and to get a bus tour around town.
I think that is reasonable for 6 nights... plus our flight on the last day is quite late so get the most of the day...
Oh and as for wrapping up... ear muffs, hats, boots all at the ready!!!!!!9 years and counting0 -

Here's what i'm planning for my Xmas trip. I'll be on my own and I fully admit I'm trying to forget my troubles at home:sad:
Thursday 22nd Dec
*Fly with BA from Manchester to Newark @ 7.10am, 2 hour stopover at Heathrow. Arrive Newark at 13.25.
*Airtrain, then train to Penn Station. Subway to Chambers for the Cosmo Hotel.
* Freshen up then head out for some food. If I haven't slept on the plane I might be flagging a bit so will keep it local. Mudville and Reade Street pub for the evening I think.
Friday 23rd Dec
* Up early and head to the 9/11 Memorial Garden. Will book my tickets before I go.
* May take the Staten Island Ferry depending on weather.
* Have a look round Century 21 and South St Seaport. Will have lunch here.
* Head uptown to hit the shops, start at Macy's then head over to 5th Avenue and see the tree etc. Apple store and Nike town.
* Head back to the hotel to freshen up. Then off to MSG for the NY Ranger v Philli Flyers Ice Hockey game at 7pm.
* Will hopefully stop off at Greenwich Village and hit a few bars after the game.
Saturday 24th Dec
* Depending on the night before I may have a lie in:beer: Will get some brunch from near the Hotel.
* Head to Meadowlands for the NY Giants v NY Jets game at 1pm. I haven't a clue how long the game will go on for or what time I will get back but I'll try and get some food when I get back to Manhattan and then hit some more bars.
Sunday 25th Dec
* Morning walk around Central Park.
* May walk back downtown taking in christmas day in New York.
* Fancy a nice Steak Meal for my Xmas Dinner. Lot's of options I know, more research needed.
* Hopefully see Rock of Ages at 7pm.
* Will bars be open in the evening? Will hit up a few if they are.
Monday 26th Dec
* Early walk over Brooklyn Bridge to clear the head.
* Head to the LFC Supporters Bar to watch the LFC V Blackburn game. I think this will start at 10am NYC time but will have to check.
* Have a few drinks there and then pick up bags and head to JFK flight home at 18:30pm.
What do you think?0 -
Looks like a good xmas plan . Havent been (shame on me ) to the lfc bar but will be worthy of a email for a early boxing day opening. I would think its a must but sometimes rules and licences differ for xmas times. There will be somewhere good and local on xmas day/night i suspect a friendly good night had by all. Enjoy nyc and a reports a must on return. hard as nails on the internet . wimp in the real world :cool:0
