  • I've read the sticky about travelling in and around Manhattan and understand how to get from the Newark/JFK to the city but I'm unsure which route is easier.

It looks to me like it’s easier from JFK but I may be wrong, has anyone one done the journey from Newark to Manhattan via the Train? How was it?

The reason I ask is I've found cheaper flights to Newark than JFK (where I originally researched).

I’m planning on staying at Yotel if that makes advice easier. Thanks!
What's gone will never come back. But it exists when you think of it ...

Has anybody been on a Foods of New York Tour, specifically the Greenwich one?

It has good trip advisor reviews and thought it would be something different to do and give us a bit of history on the area.

$49 per person for a three hour tour. If people have been, do they know if you have to book direct through the website or have they seen any 3rd party (and cheaper!) websites? I'm struggling to find any!

    Thanks.

Oh dear sorry to hear about your dilemma.

Can I ask what is going to happen to the money your friend has paid for her flights will she lose that? How much is it to change your flights? Would virgin let you fly to another destination ?

Re hotels I know hotel thirty thirty has single rooms and at a decent price (depending on when you book) I stayed in one and was fine, although could have done with more room in the bed!

I would say go alone, but will you be 100% happy doing that? I would go to NYC alone, but don't like flying to that's what holds me back!

Our flights were sale fares and non refundable so I've cancelled my friends flight (as she didn't want to change the date or location). Virgin will change the date and location for a fee and the difference in fare.
My fiance hates the whole sightseeing thing so when we go on holiday we literally stay glued to a sunlounger for the full trip! I did take him to Dublin for his 30th birthday and again we didn't stray far from the hotel/Temple Bar pubs
I got him drunk at the weekend and tried to talk him into coming with me or changing the destination but he's definitely not interested!

I think it looks like I'm going to change the date of my flight to April/May next year and entice another friend to come with me! I think I'll book a visit to London in place of the weekend I would've been in NYC.

Thanks for your replies, great thread! :T

I've just booked this online ready for my 2nd trip in December as last time we sort of half wandered around Greenwich aimlessly and would prefer to find some nice places to eat this time and enjoy a tour at the same time! I can't wait :)

I'm going to go for the 14th December I think.

Did you use the official website or find a cheaper option, such as with an attraction website?

    Hi Guys
Im hoping you can give me some guidance and influence my difficult decision!
I've been to NYC once before in December and fell in love with it. For my 30th birthday this summer my fiance paid for my Virgin flights 1-5 December (my friend also booked on these flights). We haven't booked connecting travel from Newcastle or a hotel (as my friend kept wanting to wait - wait for what I don't know!)

My friend has recently dropped out due to a "bad back" and no-one else can afford to book and come with me at such short notice. My fiance won't come as he hates shopping and sightseeing. Virgin will allow me to amend my flight up until June next year for an extra fee. I can't claim on my travel insurance as my friend cannot/will not get a GP letter to state she cannot travel. And our friendship is almost no more!

So basically my dilemma is do I:
    A) travel alone in December
    B) postpone the trip until next year and hope a friend can conjure up the money to come with me (potentially travelling seperately to minimise their costs)
    ???????

Also some recommendations on budget accomodation for a sole traveller would be great. I don't mind sharing a bathroom but would prefer to not share a room.

I'm a 30 year old female and like to think I'm quite streetwise, however NYC is a whole different ball game...
I am also moving house next year and I'm due further surgery on a troublesome foot so I may lose my window of opportunity to revisit NYC if I change my flights to next year if you see what I mean?

Any thoughts/suggestions/comments will be gratefully received.
    Thanks in advance

I'm of similar age & went to NYC on my own last year. I had an absolute ball, so much so I booked again for next year.

It's easy enough to navigate on your own & if you've been before then you should know where your going.

    Do it!!
  • re foods of new York tour- definitely a good choice. I live in nyc and used to book trips for people coming in from elsewhere and we always used foods of new york.

Get yourself out there, and go. I've know people younger than you (and female), who have done a week out in NYC on their own, and if you're streetwise as you say, just practice the same in NYC. New York is safe, so don't worry. Late in NYC is about 3 in the morning, and the subway system is still busy past midnight. Also, if you go on your own, you'll have a crazy amount of fun doing things without other people slowing you down.

Onto cheap hotels. Look at the Cosmopolitan, and see if that comes in budget, if not, look at hotels in Long Island City, such as the Country inn & suites, or the Verve. these are much more reasonable, and only 1 short hop away from Manhattan.
