It also depends if you want sales - when I went mid April there were some but not on the same level as the post crimbo stuff.

Yep it really depends what you want from the trip and possibly you and boyfriend want different things so that may make the decision tricky. It is lovely to go away at Xmas and something you remember in Xmas's to come. Gets you out of family obligations too. If you fancy going at Xmas and will have to opportunity to go again sometime I'd get it booked. Enjoy it for whatever you manage to fit it and make notes on what you would like to do on a future trip. If it will likely be your only ever trip to New York I'd go in April.

I've got no experience of Fairfield Inn, nor have I heard it recommended on a regular basis, so do double check it will meet your needs. Maybe post your dates and budget here, and see what the regulars can come up with.
We will arrive on 22nd July 2012, for 4 nights.
We need a room with two beds and max budget is $1500 (inc tax) if hotel includes breakfast & wi-fi, less if we'll need to pay for these.
(4 nights at FI on 40th&9th is $1271 inc all the above.)

    Any suggestions/recommendations gratefully received.

My vote would be on staying in NYC. And that's because we were there at a similar time of year, and it was HOT. HOT and HUMID and HORRID. And the subway isn't air-conditioned, so that's even HOTTER and HUMIDER and HORRIDER.

    A very good point

Hotel Cosmopolitan, search for it on this thread. That's where we stayed, couldn't fault it for the price.
    Thanks

The problem with Secaucus is that it is in New Jersey, and also not near any easy transportation into New York City. If you want to stay somewhere cheaper, look at hotels in Hoboken, or Jersey City, which are near the PATH line, and that's $2 per person per trip into/from NYC.

It really depends what airport you're flying into as to where is good to stay. If you're flying into JFK, which is in Queens, then staying in Long Island City is a much better idea than in New Jersey. There are reasonable hotels there such as the Country Inn Suites, the Verve, and the Holiday Inn Manhattan View.

I've stayed quite a few times at the Cosmopolitan Hotel, and can recommend it.
    Thanks
    We're flying into EWR.

Have had a look at Cosmopolitan, but would really prefer mid-town, within walking distance of Penn Station if possible

Do you know how long it will take you to get from the Cosmopolitan Hotel to Penn Station?

On an express subway train from Chambers Street to Penn Station takes around 4 minutes. At most you'll be waiting about 5 minutes for a train.

Also, there are more restaurants, bars, and nightlife around Tribeca, than there is around Penn Station.

If you're set on staying near Penn Station, You could try the New Yorker, or one of the Affinia hotels is close by, but these are probably a bit more expensive.

What the Murray Hill area like for nightlife. I'm weighing up visiting over Christmas and can get Hotel Thirty Thirty for £79 a night. It's got good reviews but not sure about the area. I'll be visiting Williamsburg and the Village for a night each but would like some bars within easy reach/ stumble:p

Hello I recommend the hotel as stayed there in April £79 is a great price! They were renovating then, didn't affect us but since I have read mixed reviews on TA - should all be over by Dec though.

I didn't really go out to bars, but saw a few that looked nice on Madison avenue. Also Union square isn't far away.

I might have a look at dates in December!

Thank You. I think it's a toss up between Thirty Thirty and the Cosmopolitan. At the moment theres about £70 difference in price but I think I would enjoy Tribeca more. Any thoughts M4RKM ?
  • Hi All

I am currently torn between 3 nights (4 days) in New York at Christmas or 5 nights in April! Cost is a big factor as its much better value to go for the 5 nights, in addition I am concerned 3 nights is not enough.

Is 3 nights enough? I am thinking 23rd to 26th December so we can actually be there Christmas day.

    Thanks

Weve booked to go to NYC for christmas this year, We leave on christmas morning and arrive in NY mid afternoon (staying 4 nights it will be our 2nd trip). There seems to be lots of places open for dinner our favorite at the moment is The Rock cafe in the rockafella centre it overlooks the christmas tree and ice-skating rink. Booked with expedia as they had some great prices, booking direct with BA there flights were over £1000 expedia prices were starting from half of that and included flights and hotel.

While im here i have to disagree with Virgils BBQ recommendations, It was the worst food ive ever tasted. agree the portions were huge but that dosent really matter when it tastes so uuuugh. Chicken didnt taste/feel cooked enough and it was too dark in there to tell. Just my opinion, not for me.
My mind tends to wander............If found please return;)

    I can spell...................I just cant type:confused:

Right i've cancelled the Thirty Thirty and booked the Cosmo. Fully cancellable for £339 for 4 nights. Happy with that. Just think the area suits my needs more.

Now to find a flight. Found Leeds Bradford to JFK stopping off in Amsterdam for £515. No idea if that's a good price but it's the best i've seen.
