We want somewhere thats clean, thats in an ok location-by that I mean ok to walk around in. We are happy to walk to attractions, we know we will be spending a large part of our time exploring either by foot or subway etc, it would be great if we had wifi, not too bothered about having breakfast included-I know most places dont. Hopefully I think we have a realistic expectation of what we will get-basically we would be ok with the equivilent of a Travel Inn type place, but a little more than that would be great. We had been looking around the times square/central park type locations because the prices were better and thought for our first visit this might be the way to go.
Our plans while we are there are so far:
ESB, Statue of Liberty
Twin Towers site
High Line
Bryant Park
Also would like to do some shopping just because its all the places we have always thought we'd see.
We dont need to be in a location for clubs etc as my daughter and her boyfriend will both be under 21 and theyre not big clubbers anyway, we would however like some nice restaurants and diners nearish or we will be researching these nearer the time anyway-places that we will find near our 'must do's'0 -
Thank You. I think it's a toss up between Thirty Thirty and the Cosmopolitan. At the moment theres about £70 difference in price but I think I would enjoy Tribeca more. Any thoughts M4RKM ?
I've stayed at both. The Cosmopolitan is a better location, there are more subway lines to get you around much quicker.
The Thirty Thirty only has the 6 local train, and then you have to change to other lines, whereas near the Cosmo, you've got a good selection to get you around just by walking a few blocks.0 -
22nd till the 26th. Just found flights from Manchester at £40 cheaper but I would have to get there for 5am so not sure if it's worth the hassle. It does give me an extra 4 hours in NY overall though:o
These flights are with BA compared to KLM/ Delta. Does any one have any experience of these carriers?
So LBA leaving at 06:50am means getting a cab= £22
Manchester leaving at 07:10am means having to get there at 5am is that right, i'm connecting at LHR. Train = £27 return but a mega wait at the Airport.
I'd much prefer flying KLM / Delta than BA. There is more legroom on Delta on the flight over the atlantic, and the connection at AMS isn't too bad, I've done that myself, however, I always fly from Manchester.
Have a look for direct flights with either Continental to EWR, or American Airlines to JFK. Both airports are convenient and easy to get to the Cosmopolitan Hotel via public transport, so it doesn't matter which you choose. Direct is easier from MAN. There maybe direct flights via Jet2.com from Leeds / Bradford, so check their website to see if they're running.

Thanks for your replies. Went with the BA flight from Manchester. There wasn't any difference in the price but the BA times meant I could eek out a few more hours in NYC! flying in to Newark and out of JFK. Will get the train subway to my hotel but may get a car service on the way home. I'm gonna see a lot of sport. The rangers game on the 23rd and the giants v jets game on the 24th. Will see a show on Xmas day and fancy a really nice steak dinner. Oh and plenty of boozing:)0

Hi Guys
Im hoping you can give me some guidance and influence my difficult decision!
I've been to NYC once before in December and fell in love with it. For my 30th birthday this summer my fiance paid for my Virgin flights 1-5 December (my friend also booked on these flights). We haven't booked connecting travel from Newcastle or a hotel (as my friend kept wanting to wait - wait for what I don't know!)
My friend has recently dropped out due to a "bad back" and no-one else can afford to book and come with me at such short notice. My fiance won't come as he hates shopping and sightseeing. Virgin will allow me to amend my flight up until June next year for an extra fee. I can't claim on my travel insurance as my friend cannot/will not get a GP letter to state she cannot travel. And our friendship is almost no more!
So basically my dilemma is do I:
A) travel alone in Decemberpostpone the trip until next year and hope a friend can conjure up the money to come with me (potentially travelling seperately to minimise their costs)
???????
Also some recommendations on budget accomodation for a sole traveller would be great. I don't mind sharing a bathroom but would prefer to not share a room.
I'm a 30 year old female and like to think I'm quite streetwise, however NYC is a whole different ball game...
I am also moving house next year and I'm due further surgery on a troublesome foot so I may lose my window of opportunity to revisit NYC if I change my flights to next year if you see what I mean?
Any thoughts/suggestions/comments will be gratefully received.
Thanks in advance0 -

Oh dear sorry to hear about your dilemma.
Can I ask what is going to happen to the money your friend has paid for her flights will she lose that? How much is it to change your flights? Would virgin let you fly to another destination ?
Re hotels I know hotel thirty thirty has single rooms and at a decent price (depending on when you book) I stayed in one and was fine, although could have done with more room in the bed!
I would say go alone, but will you be 100% happy doing that? I would go to NYC alone, but don't like flying to that's what holds me back!
Can't you drag your man along and intice him stuff other than shopping or sightseeing.. Maybe drinking? Lol0
