My fiance hates the whole sightseeing thing so when we go on holiday we literally stay glued to a sunlounger for the full trip! I did take him to Dublin for his 30th birthday and again we didn't stray far from the hotel/Temple Bar pubs
I got him drunk at the weekend and tried to talk him into coming with me or changing the destination but he's definitely not interested!

What if you supply him with bar crawls he can do during the day. Starting at 11am, he can crawl around bars, and watch sports in bars, and then meet up with you for a meal in the evening, and you can do more bars. I've done NYC in the past and done zero shopping or sightseeing, and done bars.

But, if you still can't convince him, as I've said, go on your own, you'll be fine, and you will have fun.

go for it,it sounds like your friend may have changed her mind and is using any excuse not to go.
I had a similar (ish) situation when I was going to Boston,my friend changed her mind but it was before booking.
I just went ahead and booked for myself and thoroughly enjoyed it,as I don't really stay out late I just bought loads of magazines and read those when I got back to the room and made sure I had something nice to eat.
But to be honest after walking, shopping and sightseeing all day I was worn out.
I would definitely go to NY on my own as I found New York friendlier than Boston...( that's just my personal opinion)
If your other half hates sightseeing so much it might spoil it for you if he is not enjoying himself,so when you are on your own you can do as you please!
best of luck and have a great time if you decide to go,

Could I have people's views on the Hop on Hop off bus tours please. I am going to NY in December and wondered if they were worth it. Just trying to find ways to fit in as much as possible. Thanks in advance.

We used OnBoard tours last time and it was excellent. Smaller minibus type thing and lots more personal. The tour guide gets off at stops with you an is really informative.

These are good as an overview and gives you the lay of the land, but don't use them as transportation, so Hop on, but stay on.

If you hop on and off, you'll find you're wasting time sitting in traffic, or waiting for the next bus.

The subway is the best form of transportation around NYC

    Mortgage-free Glee!
Just booked for 5 days next June in Staybridge Suites - fly into Newark at 13:00.
What's the best / cheapest way for 4 people to get to Times Square area please?
If at first you don't succeed, try, try, try - oh bu99er that just cheat :D
  • The best way is .................. Helicopter
The cheapest is .................Walk, Swim, Walk

Or you could grab a cab, pre book a limo, take the bus or catch the airtrain and then catch a train.
Do not take up the offer of a car from the many blokes at the airport as some could be uninsured/not licenced etc etc and could also cost you a fortune !

If it is your first time simply take a cab ............. but remember to have the address (Avenue/Street) of the hotel not just the name. Oh and keep your fingers crossed as you weave in and out on the turnpike ! And then the tunnel .............. Oh yes the tunnel !

    Hi All,

I am off to New York on the 27th December for 1 week. (First time!).

Would you recommend me booking my sight seeing / tours etc before I go or when I get there?

Also, are the majority of things as normal at the time of year in New York City. (other then new years eve etc)

Any hints or tips for going at this time of year would be helpful.

    Thanks, :j

  • We did a trip a few years ago at around the same time of year .................. boy was it hectic ! Great Holiday/Xmas atmosphere but lots of crowds everywhere. Really nice to see all the Xmas decorations.

Hey Ho so you have booked and you are going .......... so enjoy it ! The weather will most likely be cold and the shops hot as hell especially in you big coat, hat, gloves etc All the shops and attractions will be open and operating pretty much as normal (it's all about the money !)

If you want to do the Times Square New Years Eve thing ............... be prepared to pick you spot around mid day ish and then get caged in by the NYPD. We choose to get tickets for a bash in an Irish bar just off TS at midnight we went outside to see the limited view of the TS celebrations. The best bit was the NYPD escort from our hotel "Best Western President" through TS to O'Lunneys Irish Bar earlier in the evening (See it's not only P.Diddy who gets an escort !)

Hope I haven't put a damperner on your plans, I am sure you will love it ...... but as I said earlier "enjoy the crowds"

    Happy Holidays

  • Sorry forgot to add, keep an eye on the weather with the weather.com 10 day forecast before you go ................. May give you an idea of how many layers to pack !
