I was having a quick look just now flying from Aberdeen to JFK. Its coming in at £550 each via Dublin or £450 each via Amsterdam for flight only. Is this a good price and which airport would be the best to travel through, Dublin or Amsterdam?
The flights leave on 12th Oct returning 19th Oct,
Is it possible to find a good central hotel for less than £150 per night?
Thanks0 -

AMS is an excellent airport, DUB isn't. But then DUB is also small enough so that transiting there is really not a problem.
As discussed up thread, flying directly from DUB to a US airport means you clear US customs and immigration in DUB, so when you flight lands in the US you just collect your bags and walk out. Also, the timings might be better.
That said, £100 is a lot of money, relatively speaking. So maybe transiting in AMS is worth considering. What airlines are we talking about?0 -

Its KLM through amsterdam and Aer Lingus through Dublin. With it being £100 each cheaper it would pay for a nights hotel so would probably opt for the KLM flight0 -
Flights from Belfast are expensive cos of the Tax...I'm from Belfast but me and mum are travelling down to Dublin (on the eircom coach) for our flights....means we also go through U.S Customs here too...got 5 nights - flights and hotel for two of us for £1580.... staying in a 4.5* on Central Park - albeit that is from 1st Sep - 6th...
Hope you have fun - I can't wait to go - only 2 weeks -- eeekkkk:j:j
Hi, stayed on central park last year so definitely wanted somewhere different this time. the clearing customs thing is as broad as its long either here or there for me as i would rather get straight home than on a coach from dublin after a long flight. but thats just my preference. Also travelling alone bumps up my costs which i was prepared for. I'm so excited that i'll be there in 7 days and have a list of dos i want to cover outdoors so hope weather holds. Enjoy your trip.:beer:0 -

For info, it looks like it is going to get more expensive to travel between New Jersey and Manhattan, due to increases in the tolls and PATH fares.

Don't know when it kicks in, but a more expensive trip from Newark airport is on its way.0 -
only by $1.50 though, so about £10

Just read an interesting article on skyscanner about cheap and free things to do in new york so thought I would share here in case it's of any interest:
http://www.skyscanner.net/news/articles/2011/08/010329-20-things-to-do-in-new-york-for-1-or-less.html?utm_medium=email&utm_source=Skyscanner%20Ltd&utm_campaign=Copy%20of%20UK%20Airmail%209%20August&dm_i=OAH,I79O,3I2Z6X,1H940,1
Don't know if there's anything new in there but a few things I hadn't heard about before so it might be useful to some.0 -
Priceline is ok, but I'm not a huge fan. They use brand name hotels, which, in essence means you get a hotel that looks like every other hotel you've ever stayed in. I'm not keen on that. I like my hotels with a bit of style and individuality.
Tonight, (and for the best part of the next 3 weeks), i'm staying in hotels for my job. Holiday Inn Express, Travelodge, etc etc, Cheap basic hotels, but it's just a bed for the night. But they all look the damn same. So when I go on holiday, I want something individual, something stylish, even if i'm not there a lot, I want the nice things in life.
Priceline only guarantee a basic room with a bed in it. (for up to 2 people). If you're booking yourself, you can choose a better class of hotel room, which give you more features. You can't do that with PL or HW. Also, the areas they use are somewhat ambiguous, and you could end up somewhere you don't want to be.

I'm staying in the Intercontinental Barclay next week for 7 nights. Got it for £940 including fees on Priceline back in Feb, current price for the same week on Expedia is £1,608. :money:0 -
