Firstly I thank you very much for your quick reply to my post, but.
Mark. I knew you were an egotisticle nightmare with anything New York, but christ. this is just so bloody petty that you got to pick holes with someone's grammer and spelling.
It makes this thread so hard to read. if your not having ago at another forum memebr your belittling another for not having a museum on their list of must do's.
Yes, shopping may be a bit boring, but dont put people down for wanting to do it.
Thanks but no-thanks. think I will leave this thread well alone from now on and leave you all to have your fun.0 -
Was in New York for the first time last week and thoroughly enjoyed it.
Here are a few of my observations, they may help answer some questions.
1. The main tourist sites, Empire state, Central Park, Top of the Rock (Rockerfeller Centre), Madison Square Gardens Tour, are in quite a small area and if you are mobile are within a pleasant walking distance of eachother.
2. Statue of Liberty is a lot further away and took us about 20 minutes on the subway and a good 2, maybe 2.5, hours to walk back to 48th street. But en route we stopped at Ground Zero which is nearer the Empire State.
Please note, because I didn't know this, the Empire State is on an island, so you need the ferry from Battery Park, and you can only walk around it unless you pay extra to enter the museum. I started questioning after if we had been just as well to see it from the boat trip we did later in the week. However the ferry also takes you to Ellis Island Immigration museum which i enjoyed for an hour.
3. Grand Central Station however is worth visiting just to admire the building, even if you aren't taking the subway or a train.
4. The island sightseeing tours starting on the West coast of the Island have 3 tours per day. 2 hour tours running at 10am and 4pm, then a 3 hour tour at 12pm, so in theory the boat seldom stops. It is worth seeing the island from the water and you get to go under Brooklyn Bridge etc. Get to the boat in good time if you want a seat.
5. The views from both the Empire State and The Top of the Rock were great, but I agree you really don't need to do both, and from the Top of the Rock you can obviously capture the Empire State and more of Central Park.
In the Empire State building is the New York Skyride, a simulated helicopter flight over New York (free with the New York Pass, see below). I personally would have been a little disappointed if I paid separately for this but it was fun enough.
If you do this, you must make sure you do it before completion of the trip to the top of Empire State as afterwards you'd have to queue again.
6. We bought 3 day New York Passes which if you did just all those things I have previously mentioned, you would probably break even. But they then include free entrance to loads of musuems etc too, look them up on google. They also include Fast track on the more popular attractions. Beware, there is included a Rock Hall of Fame (I think) which has just recently closed down. We found out too late.
7. In the 4 days we were there, constantly criss crossing Manhattan, I think I saw about 5 tourist buses. I am glad I did not purchase advance tickets for these.
8. Be prepared for about £6 a pint, or a glass of wine, at least, regardless where you drink in Manhattan. We went to about 12 different places and never paid less. The exception, happy hour at TGI Friday's between 4pm and 9pm where draft budweiser (yuk) and a few other drinks were £2 for about just over half pint.
I think that's it, enjoy yourselves.0 -

Yes there is.
We walked back from the Statue of Liberty to 48th street along Broadway . so going South to North, and about between 20th and 30th (not really as far as it sounds) we saw a big liquor store on the left where we went in for Spirits and lots of different wines.
In this particular store though there was no beer. But that we found in other stores, such as a convenience store.0 -
