Any recommendations for apartments in Manhatten, or hotels, in December? Looking ideally at less than £80 - 100 a night based on 2 people in a room

    Any help much appreciated

Most apartment rentals in New York City are illegal. As you're in a tight budget, you may have to look at hotels in Long Island City, Queens, rather than Manhattan. The cheapest hotels in December are going to be around $200 a night (£125 before taxes).

    What are your exact dates?

Thanks for your answer. I don't have dates yet, i am however looking at pricing it up and thought the apartment option may be a good one so that is interesting what you say

My friend has been told that we won't be allowed in unless we are carrying more cash.

Just be aware that when you're asked how much cash you have when you're going through immigration, they don't literally mean how much physical cash you're carrying on you right then. The first time I went to New York I was asked how much cash I had and I answered "oh, about eighty dollars" as that was all I had on me at that very second. I was there for two weeks and the immigration guy started shouting in my face about how I couldn't afford to be on holiday for just $80 and must be intending to work illegally! I was shocked and explained I also had a credit card and a cash card to use for purchases while I was in the US. He wanted to know why I didn't say this in the first place - I said that to me as an English person "cash" just meant the physical money in my wallet, not a credit card or the contents of my bank account (which I wouldn't have been happy about disclosing in front of a large crowd of people anyway!). He seemed so suspicious and I really thought he was going to send me home - of course he didn't but it did worry me at the time. You might just want to avoid any hairy moments like that by instantly saying "I have X amount in notes plus a credit card" rather than being stupid like me :)

Oh Pee ........... You don't want to be spending too much time in the changing rooms of NYC when that big bad city is waiting to be explored ! Go and do the tourist sights but go and find places like The Corner Bistro, The Broome Street Bar,The White Horse Tavern and The Brass Monkey do a spot of lunch and then have a wander around and get the atmosphere of the city.

At Easter when we were last there we popped over to Juniors in Brooklyn, just up the street there is a Macys store and my wife shopped there and she found it cheaper than the main store.

Hey Greenie ......... We did the Apollo theartre tour in Harlem, really great "Billy Mitchell" the guide had me up on stage singing !!!!!!! As there were only 3 of us we joined another tour which was a group of ladies from a church in Brooklyn. Next year I'm going for the Wednesday night talent show ...........NOT !
May see you Sat night at the Bar in Dinas. I will be the one at the end of the bar slumped on the floor after trying all that real ale !

PS Has anyone any idea what "Victoria 's Secret" is ............ it's puzzled me for years and my wife won't let me go in to find out ![/QUOTE]

Well I know my daughter spend almost her entire weeks spending money in there last month!

The problem with pricing things up, especially in December, is prices for hotels can vary wildly from day to day. The first few weeks of December are the most expensive, but the week before Christmas drops in price, and then prices rise again ready for the New Year celebrations.

The only real legal option other than hotels are getting a shared room in someones apartment. They still live there, so you have to respect that they may be working during the day, and it isn't a hotel, so you don't get clean sheets daily, but this can be a great cost saving, especially for the solo traveller or a couple. Airbnb have a great selection, just tick the box for "private room".

lol It's a wonderful place!! :D And one of my first stops! Underwear, nightwear, loungewear, AND they even sell luggage...!

I love the fact that New York has so many branches of VS and every store has a different feel and even different stock!

We have booked to fly out Christmas Day from Heathrow returning on the 2nd January. I will spend some time reading this thread in the coming weeks to help with all the planning. We're stopping at the Beacon Hotel which had good reviews when we booked. Has anyone on here stopped there before?

I've stayed at the Beacon twice now, the last time just a couple of months ago, and would always recommend this hotel.

The rooms are very clean, and honestly have the most comfortable beds I've ever slept in! The little kitchen area in the room comes in very handy, and there is an amazing market (Fairways) right over the road.

72nd street subway station is just a couple of blocks away (don't bother with taxis, there really is no need), and you're about 10 minutes walk to Central Park. There is also a Starbucks on the next corner which is great for free wi-fi (especially if you need a facebook fix like me!), as you have to pay to use the wi-fi in the hotel.

The Viand cafe next door is great for food, if slightly expensive, but the portions are MASSIVE. We treated ourselves to the 'Lumberjack' breakfast on our last day (pancakes, sausages and eggs) which was delicious but impossible to finish!

Let me know if you want any more info - you've chosen a great hotel :T
Common sense just isn't that common any more....
