Yes, 2 years from the date of issue. You need to apply for it 72 hours before you leave.

I got mine in August last year, I went September 2010, March 2011, and will sneak in another 2 trips (September 2011, and March 2012), before I have to pay $14.

    Woohoo! :D

Me again! thanks for info on Visa, glad I checked as I hadn't realised we needed one.

Having a crisis of confidence regarding flights - I am taking my wife for her 40th birthday end of Jul, back start of Aug. I have booked Comfort Inn, Times Sq. with Quikbook seems ideal for our needs and in a good location (tripadvisor give it good reviews).

I am worried as I haven't booked flights yet - the best deal for 2 adults, varies from £1200 (BMI - operated by Continental) to £1400 with Virgin flying from London (again preferred airport). If I was to go next week, can get the same flights with Virign for £800 including taxes. Do I hold my nerve and wait closer to the time in the hope of getting a better deal. My dates are flexible by a day or two and the additional £400 would be better spent in NY rather than on a flight. Read that summer fares (Jul/Aug) would probably be available start of June - does anyone else have any experience or recommendations?

Also, realise it's dependent on which airport we fly into, but what are people's thoughts on transfer to Times Sq? Taxi, public transport, booking online - waiting til getting to airport etc.

Again, thank you once again for bearing with this NY virgin and helping me resolve my issues. I could talk to you about trying to organise the surprise 40th party - but that's a whole new ball game!!!!

kweelo - The hotel you've chosen is great. It gets regular recommendations over on TA on the forums too, so you've got nothing to worry about. With regards to flights, it really doesn't matter who you fly with, just as long as the price is right, and the times suit yourself.

The best web page to check on, I find is Kayak. One thing I've noticed since Friday, is that some airlines have dropped their prices of flights, for flights from the 1st September (great for me, as my flights are now cheap!!), and return flights from LHR are looking to be around the £430 mark.

I really could do with exact dates, and can mess about with flights, the only thing I can think of is that End of July / Beginning of August, does fall into the School holidays, and around £600 is the price that airlines think they can charge. I've done a random date search (28th - 2nd Aug), and the prices seem to be over £640 direct with BMI / codesharing so flying on Continental metal, and that takes you into EWR, or £667 with Delta direct into JFK.

With regards to getting from the airport, there is a guide I wrote a while ago, on that topic, linked on page 1 of this thread. Taxi's from EWR will set you back around $80 (ouch), a prebooked car service will be around $65, or you could just go public transport, and that will cost around $12.50 each. (yay!). JFK is cheaper to get to Manhattan, as it is actually in NYC, so taxi is $45, plus toll and tip, rounding up to $60, a prebooked car service $55, public transport $7.50 each.
