Hope someone can assist my search as I plan for my wife's 30th birthday gift.

Looking to Travel to NYC 22 October to 27 October 2011. We live in Birmingham, but are willing to travel to London or Manchester if cheaper. A direct flight is most preferrable.

Cheapest flight I've found so far is from London to Newark with Continental (£496 pp) through Major travel. Is it worth waiting a little longer to see if the price goes down or is this a reasonable price? Any suggestions for cheaper flights available at the moment?

In terms of a hotel - 2 people sharing one room. Would like accomodation in Manhattan around $150-200 per night. Somewhere boutique would be favourable! Same question. Is it worth booking a hotel room now or will there be larger discounts closer to the time? This date will fall during the half term holidays.

Hello (loving the newbie tag btw )

That is a good price in my opinion as I have been loking for flights for similar dates in October coming in at over £500 - I'd say if you are happy with flights book and don't check again lol (I always do..)

Re hotels I have heard October is an expensive month in NYC for hotels and this was reflected again in my quest for rooms when compared with April at the same hotel a significant increase!

I'd say if you get a decent rate which is cancellable then do consider booking now and if something better comes along you won't lose out

wow just got back from 5 days new york then a week in south beach miami

we stopped at the Carlton hotel on madison ave and 28th hotel was excellent room very comfy bed hd tv even bath robes lol was very nice just round the corner from flat iron building and 5 or 6 blocks from empire state building

flew out of heathrow terminal 4 stopped night before at the Hilton which had a connecting walkway and paid for 15 night parking at hotel we got a good deal i think £106

we flew with continental plane was empty so we both had a 3 rows of seats each to get our heads down although still watched 3 films

got a taxi from airport and was top of the empire state within 2hrs of landing it was not a really clear day but the view was over whelming from there walked across to times square and as not been to new york went on the city tour bus paid $87 dollars each for 3 days which included top of the rock and a 90 minute cruise which was good value for money we thought, we did this day 4 which was the hi lite of the trip it went from pier 83 between 41 and 42 as a bonus . the New York City's Intrepid Sea, Air, & Space Museum was there as well did not go in but took some pics of the USS intrepid aircraft carrier and a USS growler submarine. the cruise went down the Hudson towards battery park then up the east river under the brooklyn bridge turned round and litterally parked in front of the staue of liberty the view of manhatten was breathtaking as it was a sunny clear day. i bought a new pansonic gf2 camera and in 5 nights took almost 1700 pics between us . for the rest of the time we used the subway which is excellent and very safe . and value for money
we did the top of the rock at dusk as we did the empire during the day , it was brill watching all the lights come on as it got darker and darker .if your gonna do one we would recomend the top of the rock

had 1 rainy day went shopping down broadway towards Grenwich village .. went for food at a french restaurant [its culinary school for chefs ] called L`ecole , it was $25 for 3 courses of top notch food best meal we had 462 broadway. also recomend st adrews restaurant and bar where you could could have a unlimited wine or beer dinner for $59.95 which is on 140 west and 46th jst off times square oh ps say away from planet hollywood food is awful for how much you pay

New York City and south beach Miami who would think they are in the same country so different . Glad you enjoyed USA and great report . Im with you on Planet Hollywood but its a tourist trap. I enjoyed Ellens Stardust Diner for its Americanism and Broadway theatre not the food (although better than Planet H)

I've read through a lot of the posts, but not by any means all of them, so I'm sorry if this has been asked before - I'm off to New York shortly and am wondering about clothes shopping. I'm a UK 20 - 24. I understand they have lots of clothes for larger women.

I want to know what shops or chains cater for this and any you could recommend. (I'm in my thirties with a professional job.)

I want to know what prices are like compared to UK prices.

Any help would be very gratefully received.

(I have since found Macy's website, which seems to have lots of nice clothes at similiar prices to the UK, but any more suggestions appreciated.)

Your usual shops cater for uk sizes 20/24 & + sizes but they will not be sized as 20/24 but i cannot remember which way the sizes are sized (up or down) shoes too different number Many of your boutique type of shops also do have a +size range. I am a bloke shoe size 8 or 9(uk) but when in America i think it was a 10 or 11 that fitted.I asked for a 8 in a nice brown leather shoe and got spoken to like a 10 year old without toes. Try before you buy its a long way back..

Prices depend what you want and where you shop, American designers for Ladies ( Donna Karen , Ralph Lauren, Marc Jacobs etc) are cheaper and found in department stores aswell as their own branded shops. European styles will be expensive.Handbags are pricey for good ones but alot of choice type your macys and bloomys before your 5th Ave Boutiques.

Not lots, but some. 7th Floor in Macys is where you need to head to for the widest range. I think also Lord & Taylor have ranges in your size. Bloomingdales is a bit of a let down, and Century 21 is much the same.

Guide books always have sizing charts so you can find exactly what size you will be in the USA.
