Thanks to those of you who commented on my earlier post.

I have canceled our room at the Morningside Inn and am looking for another hotel (unfortunately there were no more family rooms available for our dates at the HI hostel).

We would like to stay in the Upper West Side as I've heard that it is a quieter location, plus we would like to be close to Central Park so that we can head over there to chill out.

We are actually going to be travelling around the US for five weeks by train and are very aware that we need to schedule in time to relax. We are planning to do things that the whole family will enjoy rather than dragging them around lots of museums so that complaining is kept to a minimum!!

If anyone knows a hotel on the Upper West Side that they can recommend (or another quieter location, preferably close to Central Park), please let me know.

    Thanks!

I'm not sure what your dates or the rates will be but I booked my brother and his family ( 2 kids about the same age as yours ) in the Skyline Hotel for a couple of nights before they headed off on a cruise.
It's a good location, the rates were very good, he said the hotel was fine and, importantly, it does have a swimming pool.
Early July midweek rates are about $180

It might be worth contacting the Beacon Hotel on the UWS, as they do larger suite style rooms, but sometimes they don't advertise them on their website.

I understand the need for a quieter hotel, but don't just think that you need to be on the Upper West Side. There are plenty of parks in NYC for getting away from the hustle and bustle of it all.

Personally, I love Prospect Park over in Brooklyn, and Park Slope is a great area close by that has plenty of people living in the area with young children, and plenty of playgrounds too. It might be worth looking at the Holiday Inn on Union Street which is close by that area, and near a subway station. Use this thread, to check for prices using the Friends and Family link

Fingers crossed you find somewhere, and feel free to bombard us with questions!

Have you thought about trying Hotwire? Early August is showing a 2* in the Madison Square Garden / Chelsea area for £85 including breakfast. It appears to be the Best Western Convention Center. Its not the best location but may be worth watching for other deals.
  • Ok - here's another place I've found - The Milburn Hotel (upper west side) - is it legit and would you stay there? It is listed in either the Rough Guide or Lonely Planet (can't remember which) and gets relatively good reviews on Trip Advisor - and the location we want at a good price.

Any feedback would be much appreciated.

Thanks again for all the help so far!

Milburn is a legitimate hotel, and regularly recommended over on TripAdvisor forums.

Would I stay there? It's not the area I stay in, when visiting NYC as I normally below 14th Street, or over in Brooklyn.

Hey has anyone stayed at the Hotel Newton on Broadway?

Considering booking it, it looks like a nice hotel at a decent price:)

Hi, just a heads up for people who need a cheap way to get from the airports to Manhattan - check out the JFK airport website, I'm not sure if I'm allowed to post links so just google it. There is a bus/coach service from all JFK and LaGuardia airports for only $13 one way or $22 return. Not for me because I get coach sick lol, but I'm sure many will appreciate this.
