    Hello all,

A few questions from an excited novice who’s off to NYC for the first time at the weekend! (My first ever Trans-Atlantic flight too!)

I’m staying near 42nd St (Port Authority), and flying in from Heathrow to JFK. I’ve planned to take the air train then the subway to access Manhatten, but have been told conflicting advice on where to get off for the subway connection. Is Jamaica St or Howard Beach the best option? Or doesn’t it not make much difference?!

2nd Question! My & my partner are on a relatively modest budget for our 5 night stay – but we’d really like to grab a few drinks in the “view” bar in time square which I appreciate it quite pricey. I’ve noted on the website that they do not accept cash – only card or tabs to hotel rooms (obviously we’re not staying in the hotel!). Does anybody know on the off chance whenever Visa Electrons work in the US?! Does this incorporate astronomical charges?

Final question – I’m registered disabled in the UK, are there any concessions for disabled people in NYC? Or would I have needed to have been registered in the US for to be in possession of the appropriate paperwork etc… it is fine if this is the case, but any money we can save towards seeing as many sights as possible would be great.

I’ve done a basic search of this thread, but not returned any valid answers for my questions.

Thanks in advance for taking the time to read & respond. x
When I got the airtrain I got off at Jamaica station, wasn't aware there was another station you could get off at.
As far as I am aware I don't think there are any concessions or discounts for disabled people in NY.
New York ♥..........These street will make you feel brand new, Big lights will inspire you.
No place in the world that can compare ♥ 2nd October 2010 ♥
  • i think you may be correct about the liquid thing a call to BMI should confirm for you.
could you get your duty free on outbound/in NYC and put in suitecase?

Yes I'm collecting my luggage and then checking in again.

I'll give BMI a call, I think the best thing would be to get on the outbound.

    Thanks

    Looking at the subway map

it looks to me as Jamiaca would be the easiest to get off the airtrain and then get the E train (blue line) to Port Authority.

It's Sutphin Boulevard or Howard Beach on the Airtrain for the subway. Jamaica station is a train station (from which you can get an express train to Penn for $8 (or $3.50 on weekends)).

It's $5 on the airtrain whichever route you choose, $2.50 on subway.

Subway takes about 50 mins, express train about half an hour.

I'm not sure if it's still the case but at one point you could get off at the Car Rental stop and walk to the subway and it was free.

    There is a map here

It doesn't look far from the entrance, it was a long time since I checked in at Heatrow T4 though so I don't remember.

Some reviews from royal limos here, they sounds good.

On our return we fly from JFK to Heathrow then get a flight from
Heathrow to Manchester. Can anyone tell me, can we buy any duty
free at JFK and bring it back? The thing thats bothering me is we have
to check in at BMI Heathrow so surely liquids would be taken from us?

Waits for "the Phat" our export and import guru to answer this one .

Eh up, sorry been out of the country helping lithuanian's economy.

Anyway this is an interesting one which I can kind of answer but also cant.

There are now things called "teb's" which us lot have been using for years for seized goodies however some, and this is the key word here "some" duty free shops are using, so if you buy goods and then have to go through security again as long as the seal is intact on the teb, which stands for tamper evident bag, is intact you can take your goodies airside, however this has'nt been rolled out everywhere so I cant give 100% advice.

On other point to the person saying about putting it in your luggagea at JFK, you wont be able to do that because despite the duty free shop being land side they deliver the goods to the gate, ie long after you have checked your baggage in.

So my suggestion would be, check if you see your bags at LHR if so put the duty free in there, if not do you go through a transit lounge, ie you dont actually go airside-landside-airside therefore there isnt a security issue.
