I am planning a trip to New York in January 2011, ideally i would like to travel 13th - 17th. When do you think would be best for me to book flights and hotel?
I know lots of airlines do sales in the new year, but i am a bit of a planner and don't know if i could bare to leave it that late, or if it would actually be worth while doing so??
Any advice would be greatly appriciated!0 -

looks like a busy few days,i thought the skyride was a waste of money aswell back in 2007 when i last went i dont remember having to pay to go to the WTC memorial area although it was just some railings with flowers on over looking the site back then,as they charge does that mean it is something bigger now?
Ah, it was the Visitors Centre I went to, had video, quotes, pics etc about it all. The actual site is a building site atm for the Freedom Tower/One World Tower.
Mmox_2000, my friend saved £300 on flights to Orlando in the January sale, I know its not NYC but my guess is savings will be around the same % as they're the same level of popularity.0 -

Is that the place a fair walk away in the meat packing district?
Can you still get to WTC site on the old walkway that connected twin towers to other WTC buildings over road?0 -
Myself and my wife heading across to New York a week on Thursday for her 40th. We have a theatre trip on the Friday night but I was looking at maybe going for a few drinks on the Saturday night. With that in mind I was wondering if anyone had recommendations for any "sky bar" type bars in Manhatten, something thats a few floors up and would give us some views of the city?
Also if you do have a recommendation then I would also appreciate any information on dress code. We are hoping to keep things pretty casual (jeans and t shirt) if we can so would be good to know if we were going to face any door problems.
Hi
My partner and I visited The View bar back in 2003. We got all dressed up (very unlike us as we are right scruffs) and when we got there found other people in very casual clothes, including jeans. We did got early evening (around 6pm I recall) to avoid the mandatory door charge that kicks in later in the evening - maybe this was why people were more casual. saying that, i think being dressed up helped as we got a table for 2 at the window with a fab view. We stayed for a glass of champers each (was around $11 each then) and then headed to the Rainbow Room at the top of NBC studios for another great view of the ESB. This bar was more low lit and cool with a guy playing the grand piano - very pricey drinks (cocktails around $13 at that time) but we only had one each and it was worth it. After that we went back to the hotel, got our jeans on and headed out for take out burritos and beer - cheap end to an expensive night!0 -
Hi there, I've read all through this thread, but still have a few questions and hope someone can give me a bit of advice.
I've never booked a holiday before, so I'm a bit worried about getting it wrong.:o
Myself, my boyfriend and my 12 year old son are seriously considering going to New York next year (hopefully the last week in June/first week in July). Neither of us have a credit card, so I'm a bit worried about booking flights online using a debit card, so had planned on going into a travel agents and booking flights so we have some protection if anything goes wrong. This would also give is the added benefit of being able to pay the flights up! I've read somewhere on this thread though that the airline's have flights after Christmas, so would I be better saving the money for flights until then and asking someone to book them online for us with a credit card?
My 2nd question is does anyone know of any holiday apartments in New York that are good value, as some of my boyfriend's family might be joining us and I'm just wondering if it might be cheaper to go down that route if there's going to be 6 of us.
My last question is, would it be advisable to get a prepaid credit card to use while we're over there?
Sorry for the long post, it's just I want to get things sorted ASAP, but I'm a bit worried about messing it up!:o0 -

Definitely get a prepaid card like Caxton or Fairfx.
As for the apartment question, thats a real tricky one. It is illegal to rent an apartment for less than 30days, skip back a few pages and you 'll see people questions. Also look over on trip advisor for some great tips and advice.Loved our trip to the West Coast USA. Death Valley is the place to go!0 -

Thanks very much for replying.
I work for a large hotel chain, so would probably be able to get a decent deal with the employee rate, it's just because their might be a crowd of us going now I thought the apartment idea might be better.
Off for a look on trip advisor now!
Thanks again!:money:0 -
It was outside NY, but we stayed in a Holiday Inn Express for a couple of nights, using a couple of their 'suites'. These had two double beds each, plus a fridge and the wherewithal for making drinks too (although this was a coffee machine not a kettle, but you can just about make tea in a coffee machine!), I think even a microwave.
It meant there was room for all 5 of us to bundle into one room, have a drink and plan the next stage ...
So could be worth looking at 'suites' rather than rooms.Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
Hello - thanks for all the help ive already had earlier in this thread.
Its 4 weeks till I go on honeymoon to New York, we booked flights a while ago with KLM (but on a Delta flight) through lastminute.com
We were telling a friend yesterday how excited we are now we have started making our itinery and everything, but when she asked what flights we had, we told her and she said when her and her husband booked a KLM flight through someone else they ended up sitting seperately because at check in they told her that they give priority to people to booked direct with KLM/Delta.
Has anyone heard anything about this before?
I have been to the USA a few times but my wife has never been on a flight longer that about 1 & a half hours so shes a bit nervous about the flight as it is without having to sit apart (plus its our honeymoon!)
The other thing I was wondering was if anyone had experience of getting any free upgrades because of honeymoon. We're staying at the New Yorker and im sure I read a story from someone saying they'd got an upgrade there because of just being married. Do you need to tell them in advance or just when you turn up? Do you need your marriage certificate?
I'm probably overthinking it! - I know New York is amazing anyway as ive been before so it'll be fine if we don't get anything. But as im sure everyone on this forum will agree - if you can get out for nowt - its usually worth it!
