For our trip in October, we've bought a map and also printed some from google maps and laminated a couple. I've marked on them the restauarants/dellis/bars aswell.
Loved our trip to the West Coast USA. Death Valley is the place to go!

Some random questions for the experts on here:

If we take the boat to Ellis island do we have to go through security or is that for those who want to go to SOL?

If the answer is yes, do we have to take any ID with us?

We want to see SOL ( from water) and thought about Staten Island ferry, the bottom line is we are not very good "sailors" so we want to be on the shortest boat trip, I would like to go to Ellis Island but it's not a deal breaker..........ideas, suggestions?

The little "Zoo/Petting Zoo" or whatever it is in Central park, has anyone been? what did you think?

Can't remember if I asked this before, will it be ok to take chocolate/biscs IN to JFK? dh is Diabetic so we need to have something with us, will they count that as "food"?

    Thanks guys :)

The boat visits SOL first then drops off at Ellis island, security is mandatory just to get on boat, you may as well do both stops,ID aint required.

Central park zoo,i enjoyed this it aint massive but has a resident polar bear, seals in a big open tank just as you get in,a snow leopard, open enclosure for penguins, hot house with exotic birds and a battery??(bats)if thats what they're called etc etc.

JFK dunno about biscuits, had a couple of cans of coke confiscated.

  • Some advice on gettin taxi from Newark to times square for 4 adults please. From the NY transport website this should be $30-40 plus $10 toll. Is it easy to get a taxi at the airport or is it better to book one? If you book do you get charged for waiting time if flight is delayed?

    Thanks.

If its the same set-up as JFK,outside the terminal you will find a booth on the pavement and people queueing.
Join the queue,it empties quickly, once at the front a guy will ask you where you are staying,a taxi draws up,get in and away you go,they also give a receipt?before getting in with the price on.

Planning on going in november, first time trip to the states. Does anyone know if its worth booking the flights now or waiting a few weeks for the prices to drop? I checked a few weeks ago and LHR to JFK was coming in at £434 return, now the same flight is £16 cheaper. Not a great deal cheap I know but every little helps

IIRC, Newark has a fixed fee for taxis from Newark to Manhattan but not the other way around. Going back in a cab, you'll have to pay a surcharge for going "out of state"
