OK - here is my loose itinerary for our trip in Sept...

Day 1 - Arrive in the afternoon, trip up the ESB (I know TOTR is meant to be better but DH insists on doing both) and general wonder around until too tired to function!

Day 2 - Boat trip - either circle line ferry or the beast. TOTR, Grand Central Station and Virgils for dinner

Day 3 - Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island (have booked tickets), visit Century 21, wonder round China Town Little Italy, Broadway show (will visit TKTS booth in the morning)

Day 4 - Food on Foot tour (need to book that), Brooklyn Bridge, Macys and Bloomingdales

Day 5 - St Patricks Cathedral, Yankees game in the afternoon (got tickets so thanks phatbear). Loeb Boathouse for dinner

Day 6 - Central park before home.

Need to fit in trips to Juniors, Lombardis, Magnolia Bakery and Jaques Torres.

Any suggestions very welcome! We are staying at the New York Palace in Midtown - good reviews and got a good price but don't think we will be eating there as is VERY pricey.

Book your ESB and TOTR tickets online to save time. If you are going up the ESB you may find that there is a long queue just to get in the elevators, never mind the tickets.

Day 3 sounds a bit optamistic to me. What time have you got your tickets for for SOL? Unless you are there for about 8am the queues to get on the ferry and through security can be 1-2 hours long depending on the time of year.

    Macy’s is located on West 34th Street, between 5th & 6th Avenues.

Slight bit of semantics but macys is between 6th & 7th.

Also dont forget to go to customer services and get your 10% out of towners discount card, same for bloomies too.

we made the effort to visit jaque torres in chelsea market and after several trips to the US I can confirm none of them have a clue about chocolate, I was hoping, given his status, that he would be different but alas, however chelsea market has got some nice little food shops

Just had a look at the time of the first ferry across and its saying 8.30am at the moment. I think it must change throughout the year as when i was there in April i m sure the first ferry was 9.30am with the ticket booth opening at 8.45am but can't be sure for definate. Maybe aim for around 8ish. If you ve already printed off your tickets i think you can go straight to the queue for the ferry/security.

  • What do you guys use to find your way around nyc, I've planned out what we are going to do and where it all is but I don't have a map. Would you advise a guide book with a map or is it normal for the hotels to have maps???

I like the Timeout guides for their city maps as they are quite detailed and easy to understand. Some hotels may have tourist leaflets that have maps in, but suppose would depend onwhere you are staying. Otherwise the visitors centre at Times Square has maps there.

On the map front on the last trip we took a New York moleskine with us, its small and the great thing is its like a diary so you can keep notes about things you want to see and do and also record things you have done, useful for trip reports etc. The book also comes with some acetate pages so you can stick them to the map and highlight places to visit.

Only slight niggle is the map doesnt show the subways on the map, however is has a seperate map in the book too.
