I cant believe that people dont do it!
but i know they dont as our school holds a regular thing where one week all the lost and found is put out for the parents to rummage through and find lost bits and then the next week everything left is sold to anyone who wants it...

I refuse to pay the extortionate amounts for the proper school jumpers / cardigans and get the unbadged ones from tesco or asda (and my DD doesnt look any less smart than the kids wearing jumpers that cost 10 times as much) but it always surprises me how many of these lost items are expensive official school uniform

Fabric pen worked for mine. Cheaper than labels, lasts ages and you simply add your mark with the pen to the labels already in the clothing.

Buy a "sharpie" permanent marker for about £2 and label to your hearts content!

I have bought iron on labels in the past though and one tip I was given was to put both my kids first names on there and chop them accordingly- e.g. each label had

    "John SMITH Sophie"

If you have two children you can put one initial then surname and then the other initial eg. J SMITH R, then turn over or cut off the initial you don't need.

You beat me to it Squashy!

I know when my DD first started i got a pack of iron on name labels as you want everything just *so* on that first uniform...
but i believe they are still in the drawer and for the 5 years she has been at school we have written her name and class on everything on the spaces provided on the labels with a biro... effective and cheap
she has never lost a thing

This made me laugh! I also have two bags of sew-in labels in a drawer in my bedroom. Ordered some for both DD's - I think I used 4 before I got fed up with sewing! Plus my kids hate labels anywhere on the inside of their clothes. I agree with BIRO or if it's really very expensive - PERMANENT MARKER PEN - on the inside of hem!!!

  • I bought the sew on ones . I have an unusual surname so just used that. At least then one of the kids used to come home with it.

I bought some of the iron-in ones from ebay - where you can choose, font, colour, picture etc. You can also split the order so have 2 different sets, eg 25 of one name and 25 of the other name etc. Can't remember how much I paid - less than £5 I think and I still have lots left for this years uniform.
Although ds "lost" a sweater at school with his name tag in it - but it never got found

I too did the two name thing and unpick and sew into the next size required for all of them. I have bought two lots (4DD's)and they will definitely last till after they leave home. Now I'm thinking that they should only marry a man with the same surname as we have - it happened to my cousin! I gave my own old ones to my s-i-l for her children but as we have girls only I won't be able to do that. Wonder if they'll have ebay value??

If you are getting sew in ones get a basic font in a non-gender specific colour incase you have a 'surprise' baby later on!

One tip I was given was to sew or write the name in an obvious place and do it again in an un-obvious place so that they can't just cut out the one in the neck and say it 'is theirs'.

I think I'm the only mother in Edinburgh who sews on anyway!

Thanks for all the advice. I've gone with www.easy2name.com as they sent the brochure within a day with samples. Although pricey - I'm impressed with their customer service so far.
So little money - so much time
