I bought a special maker pen that you can write the child's name on the clothes. I bought my pen from ASDA. A lot quicker than sewing in name tags. Also I have a cynical mind and opted for the pen rather than sewing in name tags because I thought that if some little oik nicked my children's (expensive) uniform then the name tags can be easily cut out. Write the name in (and not just on the label) then it cannot be cut out. I only write my children's (unusual) surname in the clothes so they can be passed down.

I had some beautiful name tapes from eBay, the type with the name embroidered on in colour and a little icon (we got a ladybird) I have actually, this year just been putting tapes with our surname on her things so that her baby sister can get a wear out of them without me having to re-sew ;)

I do also agree with Zziggi that some things you are better using a sharpie on though ;)

I use the markers aswell much easier than sewing labels in clothes.

They are called Sharpie (Rub a Dub Laundry Marker). They are waterproof and the writing is permanent. When you come to give old clothes away just cut the label out.

Snap this is all I do these days too. I have four children, three of them boys, so uniform goes down the line!!! even between the twins who are differing sizes LOL

To OP when my first started school, we did the whole name tag thing, but trust me, it soon gets tedious sewing them all in. I now use a sharpie or even a biro at a push ( i check when I'm ironing that surname can still be read) Much easier IMHO
  • Biro washes out pretty quickly - speaking from bitter experience trying to reunite 30 jumpers with 30 children on a hot summer's day. If you biro them - you have to keep on checking that the writing's still legible, I can guess a lot of faded names in jumpers but I can't work miracles!

  • Hi Congratulations on your pregnancy I have always used Taggits http://shop.wovina.com/p-21-taggits.aspx as I can't sew name tapes due to bad hands and they are so easy to use or Hubby does it lol

I got mine off ebay too.

They were iron on labels (which you could use without having to cover the label) and they are pretty much stuck fast. For coats I usually write with a laundry pen (I got 2 free ones off here a couple of years back). But would say in general, that whatever types of labels etc you're looking for, give Ebay a check out as there is quite a range and the price was the cheapest I found.

  • Thanks everyone - was having major panic last night. I think I have one of those laundry pens somewhere (if I can find which box it got packed in!). I just assumed that name labels were the "done thing" but the pen does sound a lot easier.

Pen. Either the special ones or a permanent writing pen.

Although... don't know why I bother, they still end up in a box in the janitors office or going missing or the name magically changing.
