Land Rover Discovery VS Volvo XC90

I'm sorry that is just plain wrong - the sale took place in March 2008 - STORY.
LR poor reputation for reliability pre-dates that by a very long way. Warranty Direct (who only insure cars after the manufacturers 3 yr warranty has expired) publish a reliability index. Land Rover is third from bottom!! Only Porshe and Jeep show up worse! AND they've been at that end of the table for a good few years! Several times I've considered the Freelander or Discovery but they're just too damned unreliable for the money. I smile every time I drive past one on the motorway with it's hazards on!
Note the TOP 10 for reliability - any common denominator?
Excellent, amongst the best, when they work but the police, army etc all have longer pockets than me, if they do improve then I would be very proud to own one. Until then I'll stick to Jap and I won't blame the Indians for something they inherited from us!
Carefull with that so called reliabiliy index as what it really is, is a measure of how much money gets spent fixing particular cars when the warranty company that put this index together had to pay out.
Porsche is near bottom not because it goes wrong a lot but because it costs an absolute fortune when it does.
If you look at this lease car company relibiality survey from fleet news
http://www.fleetnews.co.uk/news/story/FN50-BMW-tops-881000-vehicle-reliability-survey/48642
in puts BMW top with the 3 series better than anything else. As a BMW 3 series owner who spends a lot of time of forums my impression is that BMW do a great job of keeping costs down and reliability high in the first 3 years the lease companies have them and then I suspect relibility drops a bit and other running costs do rise a little (mines 4 years old now) and the Japanese regain their ground.
BMW seem to have acheived this with the cars coming out of their new factory that came on line in 2005 with the current shape 3 series.0 -
I have to say I have enjoyed all your banter!!
Re all your ideas.. which i am quite willing to consider.. all the cars suggested have bad reviews on what car? and the disco is the top car?
where else can i look for unbiased reviews?0 -

and the disco is the top car?
where else can i look for unbiased reviews?Land Rover's reliability record has been less than illustrious in recent years, and there are still big question marks over how this Disco will fare in the long term.
If you google parkers, auto express, channel 4, you'll find any number of reviews.0 -

My favourite quote regarding the landcruiser
‘Short of something armoured, nothing will get you as far into, and more importantly out of, a hostile place than a Toyota 4x4.’Everyones opinion is the most important.....no wonder nothing is ever agreed on.0 -

I'd agree entirely. Our old LC saw us through over 17,000km of offroad use in southern Africa before it finally expired. It was utterly reliable, easy to work on and parts were reasonable though not always easy to obtain but you wouldn't catch me using one - even the newer models - in Europe. For Europe the choice, for me, would have to be the Mitsi Shogun. Far cheaper than the Disco to run, insure and fuel and incomparably more reliable.
But its horses for courses. My personal choice for the work in Africa would have been a LWB LR but we had no choice and were simply presented with the vehicles. The likes of the Disco and XC90 simply would not have coped with the conditions and what we had was not exactly comfortable - just functional.
As to the OP's original points: I wouldn't touch a Disco if you paid me (see above), V6 or otherwise. The Volvo 4x4's are nice, if overworked, but are hardly economical. Of those he is considering I'd go for the X5. I don't particularly like it but on balance I think it would come out some way ahead of the Disco and the XC90.
I might add that I would never recommend the use of a 4x4 for "normal" motoring. If anyone is determined to use one I would thoroughly recommend that they learn how to drive it properly - and not by simply going on a 4x4 "experience".My very sincere apologies for those hoping to request off-board assistance but I am now so inundated with requests that in order to do justice to those "already in the system" I am no longer accepting PM's and am unlikely to do so for the foreseeable future (August 2016).

The only real complaint the lancruiser has apart from MPG and depreciation is the ride quality on road.
Thats just from some of the reviews found using google.Everyones opinion is the most important.....no wonder nothing is ever agreed on.0 -
sod it think I might just stick with the ford fusion lol!!!0

mitsubishi shogun is often overlooked and they depreciate wildly so bargains to be had 2nd hand.
x5 is a pitiful excuse for a car for blokes with penile malfunction.0
