Did they?
As far as I know Land Rovers have always had a reputation for being poorly put together.
If they have a good reputation then it is for the fact that, when they are working, there is nothing else to touch them in really difficult conditions.
Thats the reputation they earned, the best 4 x 4 x far.Everyones opinion is the most important.....no wonder nothing is ever agreed on.0 -

Love 'em or hate 'em they're great.
Someone asks you "What car have you got?"
You can smile back and after a slight pause say,,, "A Land Rover"
Or you can blush and mumble "Volvo" hoping the ground will open up and swallow you.Light blue touchpaper and stand well back !0 -

Yeah there terrible aren't they no one would ever use one. Certainly not mountain rescue, Police force, the army, who in fact are using defenders of all age due to their capabilities. Maybe mountain rescue/ Army should switch to the BMW X5 or the Volvo XC90 it'll be fine as long as they stay on tarmac.
The old landrovers were one of the most rugged vehicles you could get and they are used around the world. Your hatred for all things Rover is a little sad TBH, yeah they had problems but all cars have problems. Rovers problem was the lack of money caused by various problems.Everyones opinion is the most important.....no wonder nothing is ever agreed on.0 -

No, Rovers problem was that they made rubbish vehicles, period.0 -
I would agree with you under normal circumstances, however these were exceptional circumstances, the road/s were like glass, people were unable to walk on them.
Normal size / weight vehicles were just about managing to stop in time, before going in to the dyke, however these 2, probably because of their weight, that were only travelling at less than walking pace, both carried on in to the dyke.
Driving in low first would probably allow you not to use the brakes but obviously there comes a point where weight overcomes friction and depending on the slope anything will slide.0 -

...and yet the drivers chose to use their vehicles, and paid the price.
Nothing to do with the size, design, or weight of the vehicle. Everything to do with numpty drivers.0 -

In fairness you can't necessarily anticipate conditions on your entire journey and while it might be expected to find conditions slippery it might not be expected to encounter a particular combination of slope/ice etc.
As has been pointed out elsewhere, many people have never driven in such conditions nor been taught how to. That doesn't, to me, mark them out as numpties just badly informed.0 -

Yes - they are great - but not reliable. They are not mechanically put together that well.... they break down alot, for a lot of reasons... which is why us sensible ones advise the OP to avoid the LR's - cos I doubt the OP has the funds to 'support' the repairs that they will incur with this vehicle.
If you have alot of money for back up and repairs - then yes, buy one, they are great. If you don't, buy a Toyota Landcruiser.Genie
