defender started as 110 in 1983
Range Rover started in 1970
so how can a defender have got its basic design from a Range Rover.
You think Land Rover couldn't manage to copy their own design in 13 years?

BTW to be a pedant, the coil sprung utility model started as the One Ten, and later Ninety (spelled out) and later become the Defender 110 and Defender 90 with the launch of the Tdi engines.;)0 -
Get a Land Cruiser and be done with it! Far more mechanically sound than a Land rover (unfortunately) great to drive, but not brilliantly put together - its about time they were built better and put the 'b' back in to Britain - how corny is that!! :rotfl:Genie

I think hes got confused in think the defender came before the range rover but as he pointed out the defender came 13 years later.
Easy mistake as I was thinking the same thing had to read it a few times, but it is late lol.Everyones opinion is the most important.....no wonder nothing is ever agreed on.0 -

Its a shame really as they always had a good reputation but I think that since Ford sold Jaguar/Land Rover to the cheap indian TATA brand, people just aren't so confident in the brand. I have known people upgrade there discos nearly every 3 years but they are looking at alternatives like the shogun, amazon, land cruiser etcEveryones opinion is the most important.....no wonder nothing is ever agreed on.0 -

As far as I know Land Rovers have always had a reputation for being poorly put together.
If they have a good reputation then it is for the fact that, when they are working, there is nothing else to touch them in really difficult conditions.0 -

I would agree with you under normal circumstances, however these were exceptional circumstances, the road/s were like glass, people were unable to walk on them.
Normal size / weight vehicles were just about managing to stop in time, before going in to the dyke, however these 2, probably because of their weight, that were only travelling at less than walking pace, both carried on in to the dyke.0 -

The problem is taking a decent 4x4 and then sticking road going summer tyres on it. "One" shouldn't be surprised at it's lack of stopping and even starting ability despite 4WD with all that weight. Now put proper off road or winter / snow tyres on it and you'll get proper 4WD off road / snow / ice grip.
The again lighter weight 2 wheel drive vehicles do a fine job if you put winter tyres on them too.
Father-in-laws new 4WD Mitubishi L200 proved totally naff however carefully driven downhill on icy farm tracks. No prizes for guessing what type of tyre he has fitted.

OK how about spending £15K on an early 2007 used Hyundai SantaFe which will have about 3 years of the manufacturers warranty on it. 7 seater option is available.

Closer to regular car running costs. You can look up tyre prices online and you could always ring up a dealer for servicing prices, I do when costing up cars.
Land Cruiser Amazon is a deeply impressive vehicle on the rough, massive running costs though.
A friend of mine recently bought a brand new base model XC90 for £22,000 list price is about £32,000. Apparently a new XC90 model is due hence the good deal.... or is it since the much more fuel efficient XC60 which has about the same space? sells for around 25K.
What does that tell you about XC90 resale values?0
