  • He must know you cant breed a fearful dog or brother and sister. well you can but you shouldnt and most ppl wouldnt want those pups.

He sounds like a control freak (im sorry)

Hes not breeding them 'together' but doesnt want the boy done because he was told that if he doesnt get Bruno done, his head will get wider

and he doesnt want Angel done because he wants to breed her next yr

Im sorry if I have upset anyone, I didnt mean to :(

FireFox- Hes never portrayed this attitude with me so i dont know, we have been together for 3 years and we have had the dogs for 10 months and i have never seen this side of him until we got the dogs

Don't worry about upsetting us, it's not you that sounds like the problem it's him. You're great because you're asking for ways to stop this from happening, you clearly care about the poor little things! What sort of person would cause unhappiness in their own pets over something as insignificant as to make their head look wider?! I get the feeling that he only wants the dogs to go with a certain image of toughness, like they're a status symbol as opposed to actual living beings.

I was about to do a dog training post about how it could be dominance etc but certainly shouting wasn't the way to go and yadda yadda yadda...

    Until I read further on...

Can I just say that I seriously hope you have the courage to take BOTH dogs to the vets to be done! There is no way your OH should be breeding either of these dogs and with 2 intact dogs (male and female) in the house with a small baby you're heading towards trouble!

Get them done or make him get rid of them! A fearful dog shouldn't be round babies at ANY time! Add to that the hormones that will be going nuts and you have a potentially dangerous situation! I like staffies a lot but it is people like your OH who give them a bad name! If I lived nearby I'd be tempted to offer you to "nap" them for you and find them new homes where they would be looked after responcibly!

Tell him you want HIM done, as his head is wide enough already.

I've had my own Staffies for 3 years, and the family have had them for over 15 years, and we've never heard of an un-neautered dog's head growing wider than a neutered dog. It's all genetics, and chopping off the dog's boll0cks doesn't alter their genes

One of my staffies does this with her paw, when she wants a cuddle, the other doesn't do it at all;)
Your OH sounds like the sort of person who should never have pets in the first place if he's shouting at a puppy for no reason at all:mad:He'll break its spirit:(

Poor Angel...she must be so confused. To address the original question, she is not being dominant, she is enjoying contact with you...that's all. Both of my dogs do it (different breeds).

Re: wanting to breed from her. I really don't know where to start to list the reasons that it's a bad idea...and I have a feeling you already know many of them yourself. But here are a couple that might make the back yard breeders (which is what your OH would be, if he allows her to have a litter) sit up an think...

    1. Is he prepared to pay for a caesarian section of she gets into difficulties? A regular c-section will cost several hunred quid...and you can double that if it is requied out of hours. Is he prepared to spend 8 solid weeks hand rearing a litter of pups if Mum doesn't survive the birth? Or if she turns out to be a rubbish mother...it's not that uncommon and it happens to even the best and most experienced of breeders.

    2. Is he going to pay to have all the required health tests for the breed? If he doesn't and a pup that he breeds goes on to develop one of the preventable genetic diseases that are widespread in Staffies, the puppy buyer can sue him. Puppies fall under the same 'Sale of Goods' act as a TV or a pair of shoes and negligent breeders have been successfully sued under this legislation in the past. Info about the required tests here: http://www.staffords.co.uk/sbtbc/health_issues.htm

    3. Google 'Staffie Rescue UK' and see how many results are returned. There are literally thousands upon thousands of staffies in rescue centres up and down the country. Many will spend their lives in such kennels. Many more are put-to-sleep in council pounds etc every week simply because there are so many that there will never be enough homes to go around. Staffie pups are quite literally a dime a dozen...almost all will have been the product of the type of breeding your OH is proposing. All of those people will have thought that breeding a litter would make them an easy few quid. In reality, most will have been given away as a last resort when good homes willing to oart with a few bob were not forthcoming. In all likelihood, he'll be lucky to sell a couple of pups. What will he do with the rest? Give them away...in which case what is there to gain from the breeding (assuming that money is his motivation)? And what happens to the pups? Can he keep them all? Or are they condemned to life as another statistic in rescue?

When he coems home, he doesnt give me choice, he tells me to lock her up or he will do it, so shes stuck in this cage and I want to cry. I have tried to talk to him over and over and over and over again but hes not listening to me.

Iv even thought about putting the pups up for sale to make sure they go to a better home because as much as I love these dogs, I dont think they will ever be as happy as they could be with a partner such as my oh's

He goes on about Cesar Milan and blah blah blah but I keep telling him cesar milan is not always right and I have never seen cesar shout at a dog but as usual, my oh's way is right and he doesnt want to listen to anyone else

Unfortunately, as they are his dogs he wont let me :(
I have secrety wanted to book an appointment and get Bruno does if he wants to breed Angel but i would get into loads of trouble so I rather not

I've picked out the parts in bold that worried me, maybe I am oversensitive as I had a controlling marriage which wasn't like that from day one. :o Yours doesn't come across as an equal partnership in the few posts I have read.

Unfortunately when it comes to the dogs, I have to admit, he has shown a lot of control over them and i must do things his way when it comes to the dogs. Yes you are right, what I have said does not look good and I will not try ans sugar coat or explain anything.

I love them to bits and I just want the best done. I think I will have to try and get them done when he is not around. If he does insist he wants to breed them, I will seek advice from a professional breeder and I will personally take the time to look after the litter, I am not leaving it in his hands. I have told him, he needs to research this if he wants to do it but he hasnt, I am going to have to do it if he doesnt. Its not a 10 second decision with no complications

Thank you guys so much for listening to me and not judging me or anything. I really do appreciate it

It is very hard to sell staff pups nowadays, the market is flooded with cheap staffy pups. they are being over-bred - there are more staffs than there are homes for them - just look in your local rag.. people see these ads, and think that it means the price asked for the pups is the going rate - however, I have known of several people who have bred litters of staffs, and have ended up with the whole litter, or most of the litter unsold at ten weeks and older...

Staffs are also the breed most likely to end up in rescue, and most often to be hard to rehome and to end up being PTS - I wonder how many of Angel's pups will end up adding to these statistics..?

See here for more info about the staffy problem:
    http://www.savethestaffies.co.uk/

look at this rescue - from just one dog rescue, 16 pages of dogs needing homes, almost all of them staffs or staffy crosses:
    http://www.dogsos.co.uk/#/i-need-a-home-1/4524588420

I do appreciate that these dogs are your partners and you cannot change his actions or force his hand - but perhaps you could try and educate him a little (gently - most men hate to have to admit they are wrong, especially regarding their macho dogs!;)) about some of the key issues..?

I don't know if you saw 'Seven pups for seven people' - but it highlighted the difficulty of finding good homes for pups, the woman ended up out of pocket even though she did none of the proper vets checks etc and cut all the corners...
    http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00nts91/Wonderland_Series_2_Seven_Pups_for_Seven_People/

I do wish you luck, I know how difficult it can be to get people to change their minds about these things - especially some men (in my experience) who seem to feel that any misbehaviour from the dog 'shows them up' or dents their ego somehow...

.. but that little pup is not trying to show her dominance, she is trying to show you affection and love... if he teaches her this is a bad thing, the consequences could be really negative...

ETA - would the risk of pyometra be an incentive to have the girl speyed?
