So presumably as you saved the VAT buying from Simply, HMRC (through whichever courier that was used) charged you the VAT (and duty and administrative charge) on its arrival in the UK?

Or was this one of those "magic" transactions that avoid VAT?

Was there something that looked like this on the parcel?

Glad you had no problems only just the longer waiting time. I dont personally believe its a scam site despite the negative comments, I just think that it is something that makes things more complicated. I know in the UK we are governed by our own laws etc which are good to some extent but that does not always guarentee you'll be protected especially if the company has ceased trading. The only disappointing thing about it is that it said 2-3 days shipping, when i ordered on the 22nd, I queried it on the 26th and was told it would be dispatched 2-3 days later. The information displayed in the my account section has not been updated yet to say it has been dispathed so i'll just have to wait and see.

Got me thinking that must be the only way it works for them. Maybe the ones that did end up paying VAT were the goods that were caught by customs.

He doesn't exist. Another one post wonder MSE account. He didn't order anything. His job is to post positive experiences about Simply on boards like this and similar social media.

Do you really think HMRC aren't interested in £3,000 cameras being imported VAT-free into the UK?

I thought I would just update everyone on here as promised especially those whom of which may have placed an order with simply electronics and may be worried that due to the negative reviews regarding them.

I orginally ordered a phone on the 22nd it took a while for them to dispatch it but when they did I got an e-mail on the 30/06 saying it had been collected. It finally arrived today in a standard box with a trackable DPD label return address the Netherlands. There was no customs label or charges.

The phone was undamaged and was carefully packed in full working oder. The only thing different which other people have said in ealier posts is that it came with a non uk charger but an adpator was supplied. this obviously does not bother me as it makes no difference.

The important question, would I buy again?

Well, if I knew I was actually buying overseas before ordering, i woudn't go anywhere near for high value items as its too risky. I think in future I will do more research on companies that are independant before buying. However apart from the long wait, this was not a bad transaction and e-mails were answered quickly and politely. Full tracking information was provided when the item was sent which was reassuring. Depending on what I was buying due to this experience I would possibly consider it again.
  • BUYER BEWARE - I am amazed that these reviews for SIMPLY ELECTRONICS that have a registered address in Newbury date back as far as 2010 and people are still suffering from the actions of this company. PLEASE READ ON!

READ the reviews on Amazon, on Trust Pilot, Google this firm, check other online sites. You will see the reviews are NOT positive. This company's reviews and service are appalling. STEER CLEAR!

Here's what happened to me -
I sent back my mobile phone (bought online Feb 2013) UNDER WARRANTY to be repaired in Sept 2013. THIS IS ALMOST A YEAR AGO! It was an expensive Dual SIM phone. AND NOW? No, I STILL DO NOT have my HTC Dual SIM Desire V Mobile Phone back from them.

Because it was faulty, and within warranty, under the Sale of Goods Act 1973, I am entitled to a REFUND, REPAIR or REPLACEMENT of my phone. Despite 4 letters to the address in Newbury, support from Trading Standards and a volume of emails (I have them all - there are too many to count), I cannot get my phone repaired, replaced or my money back.

They have taken payment AND they have my phone. Technically this is THEFT to me.

I have proof of delivery to them for my phone and EVERY single letter to the address. I have been polite and I get back emails telling me that they appreciate my patience and to 'Have a nice day!' I do not get any answers or action. I do not get my repaired or replaced phone or my money back.

Despite chasing, despite the time that has gone past, nothing seems to make any difference. I am now taking legal action against the firm

PLEASE READ REVIEWS CAREFULLY - I do not believe in writing bad reviews because I believe in giving a company a chance to rectify an issue first. This is not the case here. If I can prevent one person from losing out to the false address, false company and losing their money, I will be pleased.

Please also note that a group of people are trying to get a major online supplier to block them from selling via their site due to complaints. Don't believe me? Google Simply Electronics and read the reviews for yourself. BUYER BEWARE - this company is NOT what you think!

If they were a UK company, abiding by UK laws, then yes you would be.

However they are not, so as you say, BUYER BEWARE

PS Is the Newbury address just there to fool people into thinking they are a UK company?

    SOGA was 1979 not 1973. :)

The Supply of Goods (Implied Terms) Act was 1973

Either way, Im not sure it applies in Hong Kong. Just as this Hong Kong law does not apply in the UK.......
