Simply Electronics - WARNING

  • Hello all, this is a first time post so sorry if it goes on a bit!
I ordered an iPad air for my sons 16th birthday from simply electronics and like so many others panicked after reading the reviews. I'm normally quite astute when It comes to online purchases but on this occasion I was short on time and very attracted to the £70 saving compared to everyone else.
I ordered it 14 days before my sons birthday thinking it should be plenty of time. I was emailed a tracking number almost immediately, I checked daily and it seemed to be awaiting dispatch for a week which is when I looked at reviews. I needn't have worried as much as I did because within minutes of emailing customer services I had a response saying they are waiting for the couriers to collect. Two days later another email from customer services to confirm the iPad had been collected (this was Thursday 27th march) and a DPD courier tracking number was also emailed. DPD can be tracked on the day of delivery even providing a satellite tracking map! The iPad was delivered on Monday 31st March. 100% genuine apple product with a Uk plug. So all the people on here saying they are a Hong Kong company supplying US spec products can't possibly be right. From dispatch to delivery was just 3 working days! Total time from first order was 16 days (11 working days) You just need to be patient! Although my son got his ipad two days late the saving and the look on his face when he saw it was the 'air' was definitely worth the wait!

@Paneltech - could you post the £££ breakdown of your customs/duty/VAT invoice please? Even better, post it online. And what the process was for paying it and delivery e.g. they dropped a card through your door, you paid by phone or online, you arranged for delivery, they delivered etc.

Readers will assume "no reply" to this request means that your above post is a total work of fiction.

Also, why would they email you a tracking number immediately, but wait a week and a half before the courier collects it?

  • I naively ordered an ipad air in march this year as their website stated 4-10 days for delivery. Simply Electronics go thru a merchant called Moneybookers. I was 24 hours later deffrauded over £400 from my account by fraudsters. To add insult to injury, I have not received my goods despite several calls and emails and had money fraudulently taken from my account. They claim they are expediating my delivery. I have no faith that I will ever receive my goods and its day 18 already. Avoid this company at all costs. They cannot deliver and you may be putting your money at risk by using their site.
Biggest regret I have ever made.
  • Hi, you want me to clarify how much duty I had to pay? I didn't pay any import duty. The process for my purchase went as follows;
I googled 'iPad air cheap', Simply Electronics was one of several companies at the top of the screen displaying a picture and a price,£329.00 with free delivery. Which I'm sure most people who are looking for an iPad air will know that is £70 cheaper than on the high street.
So I clicked on the link, looked on the website, added it to basket and then went through the process of paying for it. In exactly the same way as I have done for numerous online purchases. The payment was taken by a company called Skrill. I received an immediate email from them to confirm they had received my payment, and an email came from Simply Electronics giving me login details to track my order. Everything seemed to be processed in the same way as all other online retailers. I only registered on here to give my opinion, my order was delivered in reasonable time and I saved some money. I only thought people like myself who had become alarmed at all the negative reviews for this company might like to see that somebody (me) has received a positive result and they didn't seem to do anything wrong in my opinion. I certainly didn't expect my integrity to be called in to question.

So, to clarify, you are claiming it wasn't dispatched from Hong Kong, or anywhere else outside the UK?

Would be useful if you posted the parcel tracker details to back up your claim.

  • Do you want my inside leg measurement too? I don't understand why you would think I'm lying. Surely a review site can't work properly if there are only ever negative reviews. I paid my money, got my product, not as fast as I'd like but I got it. I just assumed people might want to know of a satisfied customer. If I can figure out how, I will post the email I received from simply electronics with my order number on it. I have cropped it because it has sensitive information on there and if you ask me for that clearly YOU are the scammer.

The reason people are suspicious of your post is that you have no history on this site to give credibility and some of the big Chinese/HK sellers are well known to have people going around social sites all day creating and posting glowing reports. We have no way of knowing if your such a poster or not if you think about it objectively.

Going on the offensive straight away is typical of the false reviewers behaviour too so if your genuine your doing yourself no favours.

Also the question about customs is because the £70 'saving' you made is only a matter of luck as you slipped through the net, you could well have been hit by customs charges which would have wiped that out, in fact you have very lucky as expedited courier shipping is customs favorite target to check as they know its more likely to be high value stuff. Customs are your liability not the sellers despite what sellers may claim.

Now look from the point of view do you want to buy from the UK with no customs risk, quick delivery and be able to return it to a UK seller if faulty... or take a gamble and possibly pay more, get it 2 to 4 weeks later and have to pay £20 postage to send it back its up to them, my point is only that it needs to be an informed choice.

Personally I buy quite a bit of stuff direct from China and Hong Kong and make some good savings but its a calculated risk.

Your assertion that it came from the UK rather than Hong Kong just doesn't ring true. That's why. Look at all the other posts on this thread.

Simples one new user has had excellent service.
Thousands of us have had poor service with many problems and often non UK stock supplied .
Fact we will get more posts from new posters saying help SE have ripped me off compared to those that say they are excellent .
A google of SE complaints returns 8,120,000 results is that not a lot .
