Have a look at this and this thread
    Here are some useful links:
    Avast
    Microsoft Security Essentials
    McAfee removal tool
  • On the other side of the hence currys are doing kaspersky 3 user inernet security for £19 and if you use quidco its even cheaper will do every thing and will update its database of spyware and viruses hourly as oposed to daily which most of the free stuff does.
Although there is nowt wrong with the free stuff stated ,I've used them my self

    Many thanks all!

I think I will start with the Security Essentials and see how I get on. Now that I know the free stuff is fine, £19.99 sounds way too expensive! :D
Trying to spend less time on MSE so I can get more done ... it's not going great so far! :)

Thanks a mill, I know I have a Avast on the Desktop PC after seeing it mentioned on this site. I use Firefox so will look for those add-ons to use in the meantime anyway.

I wonder which is better, Avast or the Microsoft Security Essentials. Does anyone have any opinions on which to go for and why?

Never a problem N;). I can definitely speak with regards to longevity and strength of security when it comes to Avast; I've used it for approx. five years and it just gets better and better with each update. I have (had) MSE installed on a different laptop and I do like it, don't get me wrong, but I am putting my faith in Avast.

HTH. And let us know how you get on

Thank you! You make an excellent case for Avast - and I do remember that it was easy to install etc.

I'm going to leave McAfee on for now (it expires in April) as I haven't noticed any problems with performance cos I don't use the laptop for anything too demanding. I'll post back my update when I install my free alternative - and probably will have more questions knowing me! :o:D

^Very easy to install N; and if you do dislike it, for whatever reason, then just remove and switch to MSE. You might want to create a system restore point before you go ahead with the install - although I've yet to see Avast cause any problems. ;)

Great suggestion, thanks :T. I haven't got anything important on the laptop so even if it went pear-shaped it wouldn't matter.

I guess the answers will be different. This is what I use for both my desktop and laptop.

    - MS Windows XP updated all the time.
    - Zone Alarm firewall.
    - Microsoft Security Essential as my AV.
    - Microsoft Windows Steady State Harddisk Protection ON (protecting the partition where Windows OS is located).
    - Using non-admin Windows users for everyday usage.
    - Keep my Internet Browser applications up-to-date.
    - Weekly Spybot Search and Destroy Scan (which normally comes up clean).

    Hope this helps.
