Google for Beta McAfee (for some reason the forum doesn't like me posting links).
Sign up couldn't be easier - just give them a valid email address and make up a password - click on the activation link they send you and that's it.
Log in and download the latest software.
It's really entirely up to you if you want to participate in their forum and report any bugs/glitches etc. - in 3 years I've not had any problems worth reporting and you don't get any e-mails hassling you if you don't report anything.
Most software companies do something similar, not just the AV companies.Gus.0 -
Thanks Gus! Should have thought of Googling it myself!Trying to spend less time on MSE so I can get more done ... it's not going great so far!
Sorry if I don't reply to posts - I'm having MAJOR trouble keeping up these days!

I'm going to leave McAfee on for now (it expires in April) as I haven't noticed any problems with performance cos I don't use the laptop for anything too demanding. I'll post back my update when I install my free alternative - and probably will have more questions knowing me!:D
Sorry but Im obviously doing something wrong as I can't get this to load, maybe Im trying in the wrong place but it's defo not working for me. Any help with the exact link would be fabulous. Many thanksRainbowLiberty0 -

I have removed McAfee using Add/Remove Prrograms and gone to the link above, but I can see where to click to get the removal tool. All it seems to say is that restarting your pc after removing will remove it.0 -
Can I make a quick case for Avira (free). Small, light, nice interface (couldn't get on with the Avast one, maybe that's just me) and jut sits there doing it's job with no fanfares.
As for firewalls, I've the PCTool free one and, again, just sits there and does it's job.:wall: Flagellation, necrophilia and bestiality - Am I flogging a dead horse? :wall:
Any posts are my opinion and only that. Please read at your own risk.0 -
Step 2 - Download and run MCPR.exe
1. Download the removal tool from: http://download.mcafee.com/products/licensed/cust_support_patches/MCPR.exe
2. Click Save and save the file to a folder on your computer.
3. Navigate to the folder where the file was saved.
4. Make sure all McAfee windows are closed.
5. Double-click MCPR.exe to run the removal tool.
NOTE: Windows Vista users must right-click MCPR.exe and select Run as Administrator.
6. Restart your computer after receiving the message CleanUp Successful.
Your McAfee product will not be fully removed until the system is restarted.
If the message Cleanup Unsuccessful is displayed, follow the steps below to view and save your MCPR log files for analysis by Technical Support.

Thank you so much, I appreciate it.
I "read" the instructions 3 times and still managed to miss Step 2. Somehow I read it as "if" MCPR.exe pops up to click on it and it didn't. I was also looking for Win 7 instructions, but the Vista ones worked fine.

I've been reading this thread and have decided to change from AVG to MSE.
When downloading MSE it suggests uninstalling current virus programs. Is this wise or essential? Can I disregard the message and remove AVG after MSE is in place?0
