Thanks ahmjt, loads of good advice there. I've never heard of the Windows Steady State disk protection, where can I find that?
Trying to spend less time on MSE so I can get more done ... it's not going great so far! :)

Windows Steady State is a free tool from Microsoft. If you google "Windows Steady State" you will definitely get to its webpage. As a new user, I am not allowed to post links here, but you will not miss it for sure.

You don't need Windows Steady State. It's designed to be used on machines shared by multiple people. I suppose if you have several family members with different accoutns it may be useful but really it's designed for use in places like internet cafes or libraries.
It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die

Thanks Bill! Well I'm the only one using the laptop so I guess that's one less thing to worry about then!:D

have to agree with the post quoted above.

steadystate is really for locking down shared machines (like companies do with windows server/group policy/active directory).

  • If you've been happy with McAfee then why change ?
If it's paying money that's the problem, do what I did and sign up as a 'Beta' tester.
That way you get the very latest software, free and gratis.
I've been doing it for 3 years now and not had any trouble at all.
The latest version of Total Protection Suite is a lot less resource hungry than previous versions btw.
    Gus.

I use Steady State because I like the Harddrive Protection option. Even though I am not using/sharing my computer with anyone, I turned the protection on so that my windows partition stays clean all the time. Also, from time to time, I download various free softwares for testing. As I have the HDD protection on, just a simple restart brings back my old HDD. It is just an extra bit of protection, but yes having steady state involves a bit more of your time to update/maintain your Anti-virus definition, windows updates etc.

You can do that?! Wow! How do I sign up as a beta tester? Because I haven't had any problems with the laptop running slowly. I don't know if McAfee was or wasn't doing a good job, but I haven't had any problems so I guess that's good. It was purely the money putting me off.
